SEATTLE - The second half of Pac-12 play begins at home this week for the Husky volleyball team, and the race for the conference title is wide open. All three teams in Seattle this week find themselves right in the thick of things. Washington (16-4, 7-3 Pac-12) first hosts USC (12-8, 6-4 Pac-12) this Friday night at 8 p.m. and then takes on UCLA (12-7, 7-3 Pac-12) on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. for Dawgs & Daughters Day.
With the first 10 matches in the books, seven teams are within two games of first in the Pac-12 race. Were it not for an 0-2 comeback win for Stanford at USC last Sunday, six teams would currently be tied for first. As it is, the Cardinal are alone in first with an 8-2 record, with the Huskies, Bruins, Washington State, and California all tied for second at 7-3, and USC and Utah one game back at 6-4. Washington fell to No. 12 in the AVCA rankings this week after going 1-1 last week but remained at No. 6 in the RPI.
USC won the first meeting against the Huskies one month ago in Los Angeles. The Trojans knocked off then-No. 15 Cal last week and were up 2-0 on Stanford before the Cardinal rallied. Through 10 conference matches, USC is hitting .242 and holding opponents to a .200 mark. Khalia Lanier ranks second in the league with 4.65 kills per set while middle blocker Jasmine Gross is leading in blocks with 1.51 per set and hitting .393 to rank fourth. Brooke Botkin also adds 3.28 kills per set and sophomore setter Raquel Lazaro is posting 10.72 assists per set.
UCLA upset both Cal and Stanford last week and junior Mac May was named AVCA National Player of the Week. May is leading the league with 4.78 kills per set in Pac-12 play and Emily Ryan is leading in attack percentage with a .443 mark. May also ranks second in aces with 0.36 per set. The Bruins run a 6-2 offense and are hitting .260 as a team with opponents hitting .219. UCLA is third in Pac-12 play with 1.36 aces per set. Washington won the first meeting down in L.A., pulling out a tight fourth set despite 29 kills from May in the match.
