CORVALLIS, Ore. --- Amber Melgoza and Alexis Griggsby kept up their hot scoring, recording 20 and 15 points respectively, but it was not enough as Washington lost 78-67 at No. 11 Oregon State on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies drop to 7-8 on the season and to 0-3 in the Pac-12 while the Beavers improve to 12-2 on year and to 2-0 in conference play.
Melgoza and Griggsby, who combined for 49 points at Oregon on Friday, continued to pace the Washington offense, combining for 35 in Corvallis. Melgoza scored 20 points and added a team-high seven rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals. Griggsby, who didn't attempt a shot in the first half, connected on 5-of-7 from three-point range in the second and added two assists and three steals.
Washington struggled in the first half, hitting just 28.6 percent from the field and trailing 38-26 at the half. But the Huskies came out firing to start the second half, outscoring the Beavers 12-4 through the first four minutes of the third period to cut the lead to four at 42-38. But that would be as close as Washington would get as Oregon State used a 10-0 run later in the quarter to break the game back open and hold on despite a strong finish by the Huskies.
Washington forced 17 Oregon State turnovers to just 11 by the Huskies, converting the Beaver miscues into 19 points. UW also held a 17-10 edge on the offensive glass and outscored the Beavers 15-7 on second-chance points.
The Huskies were unable to contain Destiny Slocum, who scored 30 points and had six assists and seven boards in the game. She had 18 points in the first half, connecting on 7-of-11 from the field while the rest of her team made 7-of-24 in the half.
Oregon State opened the game with five quick points and led 8-2 just over three minutes into the game. T.T. Watkins ended the run with a three-pointer, but the Beavers countered with a three of their own to stretch the lead back to 11-5. After trading baskets over the next few minutes, the Huskies used a quick four-point run to cut to within five at 16-11 with 1:23 left. But Oregon State drained a three-pointer with 1:10 left and held a 19-11 lead after one.
Oregon State opened the second quarter on an 8-1 run, stretching its lead to 27-12 just 1:30 into the period. Still trailing by 15 midway through the quarter, the Huskies began to chip away using a 7-3 run capped by a steal by Hannah Johnson leading to a corner three by Haley Van Dyke to make it an 11-point game with 1:23 left. After an Oregon State three, Melgoza drained a tough fadeaway jumper just before the half to make it a 38-26 game at intermission.
Alexis Griggsby came alive for the Huskies in the third quarter, keying a 12-4 Washington run to open the period with a pair of three-pointers. Washington capped the run and pulled within four on a great play by Melgoza, who stole an inbound pass then finished the play with the fastbreak layup to make it 42-38 at the 7:05 mark. After trading buckets, the Beavers would break the game open over the final five minutes of the quarter, using a 14-3 run over the next four minutes to make it 58-43. Missy Peterson would hit a tough pullup as the horn sounded, but the Huskies trailed 58-45 after three.
The Beavers kept the run going through the first half of the fourth, scoring the first seven points of the quarter and a 10-2 run overall to take a 68-47 lead at the 6:26 mark. The Huskies cut into the lead over the next two minutes, using a 10-2 run to make it 70-57 with 2:54 to play. Oregon State would run off four quick points, but Washington kept up the pressure and got a pair of three-pointers by Griggsby to make it an 11-point game with 54 seconds left. The Huskies would get it as close as nine over the final minute, but could get no closer in the loss. Overall, Washington outscored OSU 20-8 over the final 5:32.
Washington returns home for its next game, hosting Colorado on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena.
