No. 13 Panthers Too Hot For No. 12 Huskies

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A hot-hitting 13th-ranked Pitt Panthers squad was unable to be slowed by the 12th-ranked Huskies today as Pitt (9-0) knocked off the Huskies in straight sets at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse, in the first match of a double-header for the Dawgs (4-2) at the Panther Invitational.
The final tally was 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 for Pitt. The Panthers had 29 kills and just two hitting errors over the final two sets and hit .425 in total for the match, while the Huskies hit .149 as a team. The .425 opponent attack percentage was highest for a Husky opponent since a 2016 Elite Eight loss to Nebraska.
Sophomore Samantha Drechsel led the Huskies with eight kills and Kara Bajema had seven kills while junior Avie Niece hit .625 for the Dawgs with five kills on eight swings. But across the net, Kayla Lund hit a dominant .727 with 16 kills and no errors on 22 swings.
Freshman Ella May Powell had 27 assists and three digs and Shayne McPherson's eight digs led the Huskies in that column.
Washington's offense got progressively better throughout the match, going from .061 in the first set to .120 in the second to .276 in the third but Pitt also improved in each set, playing an error-free third set where it hit .652 with 15 kills on 23 attacks.
