SEASON PREVIEW: Middle Blockers | Liberos | Setters | Outside Hitters
SEATTLE - A new-look Husky squad is set to make its season debut this week as the 2018 season begins at Alaska Airlines Arena on Friday night. Washington, ranked 17th in the AVCA preseason poll, will take on 14th-ranked San Diego on consecutive nights to kick things off, this Friday and Saturday, both matches starting at 7 p.m.
It will be a stern early test for the Dawgs as they begin a new journey with six newcomers, a year removed from graduating a seven-member senior class, five of whom earned All-America honors during their time at Washington. Fourth-year Head Coach Keegan Cook brought in the nation's third-ranked recruiting class according to PrepVolleyball.com, with five freshmen from all around the country injecting some talent into the gym.
Leading the way now will be the lone senior Destiny Julye, and a strong junior class that has contributed mightily to the past two successful seasons but will be asked to step up in a bigger way this year. Preseason All-Pac-12 pick Kara Bajema was the top scorer down the stretch of 2017 for UW, while Avie Niece has started over thirty matches in two years and Shayne McPherson has a season and a half as a starting libero under her belt. Continuing to improve on an All-Freshman Team season for sophomore Lauren Sanders will also help the young Huskies along.
Last season San Diego won a share of the West Coast Conference title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, finishing 25-5 overall. The Toreros were picked to finish second in the 2018 WCC preseason coaches poll and San Diego's senior middle blocker combo of Kaity Edwards and Addie Picha were both voted to the All-WCC Preseason Team. Picha was an All-America honorable mention last season when she hit .413 for the year with 2.36 kills per set and 1.32 blocks per set. Edwards was also efficient, hitting .382 with 2.68 kills and 0.59 blocks per set. The Huskies have won all three previous meetings with the Toreros.
The Huskies have won 16 straight season-openers, but only once in that stretch did they open against a team ranked in the top-25, back in 2006, a 3-0 victory of 15th-ranked Ohio.
