UW Wins Battle Of Huskies, 7-1, At NCAA Conway Regional
June 01, 2018 | Baseball
CONWAY, S.C. Β βΒ Joe DeMers pitched eight strong innings and Washington scored five runs in the eighth inning to break open a close game as the West Coast Huskies beat the UConn Huskies, 7-1, in the first game of the NCAA Conway Regional on Friday at Brooks Springs Field.
Β
The No. 3 seeded UW Huskies (31-23) now await the winner between No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina and LIU Brooklyn for a 2:00 p.m. PT game on Saturday.
Β
"I thought we played a pretty good game," Lindsay Meggs said after he improved to 4-4 in three post-season appearances as the Huskies' head coach. "We didn't make an error, we reached double-digit in hits, and I'm really pleased with the way Joe pitched."
Β
UConn opened the scoring the in the first inning stringing together a pair of hits and a walk off DeMers to grab the early advantage. But, the first inning run turned out to be the only one the All-Pac-12 junior would allow on the day.
Β
After the first inning, DeMers would retire 12 of the next 13 batters he faced and didn't allow another hit until a lead-off single in the sixth inning. He ended up giving up six hits, issued a walk and hit a batter, while striking out six in his 107-pitch outing. DeMers improved to 7-3 on the season.
Β
"He's just such a flat-liner," Meggs said of DeMers. "He never gets too high; he never gets too low. He has a plan and he likes his stuff. He thinks his stuff is better than they are, so he's going to stick to the plan, and that's what he did."
Β
Washington was able to tie the game up in the second and took the lead for good in the sixth inning before erupting in the eighth.
Β
In the Huskies second, reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week and recently named All-Pac-12 member, shortstop Levi Jordan doubled with one out and his double-play mate at second base, AJ Graffanino, followed with a RBI single up the middle.
Β
Both Graffanino and Jordan had three hits on the day.
Β
The score remained tied until Joe Wainhouse unleashed on the first pitch he saw from Mason Feole (9-2) and crushed it out of the ballpark and into the parking lot beyond the right field fence to give his Huskies a 2-1 advantage. It was Wainhouse's team-leading 15th blast and moved him into the top-10 UW single-season list.
Β
UConn tried to tie things up in the seventh inning and had two runners on with one out, but after a meeting on the mound with pitching coach Jason Kelly, DeMers induced Conor Moriarty to roll into an around-the-horn, inning-ending double play.
Β
That proved to be huge for UW as the Huskies sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times to put the game away in the next inning. Jordan had a RBI single to give UW a 3-1 lead and Graffanino picked up his second run batted in of the game with a hit that ricocheted off pitcher Jacob Wallace to force him to the bench. Willie MacIver followed with a safety squeeze that Jordan was able to score on when he dislodged the ball from catcher Zac Susi's glove with his foot.
Β
Late-game replacement Kaiser Weiss followed with a RBI single and the final run scored when Mason Cerrillo grounded into a fielder's choice.
Β
The win improved Washington to 23-20 all-time in post season play.
