Wide-Eyed Huskies Keep Winning And Are One More Away From Making UW History

"I stood there and I said, 'Hey, is this awesome or what? Isn't this incredible? This whole environment, this whole situation, this whole moment. You were born for it. You were made for this moment. If they throw one over the plate, just get your best swing off.' "
Β
Kahle did exactly that, putting a charge into the first pitch he saw from Chanticleer's righty Jason Bilous for a grand slam home which capped a six-run, second inning that carried the Huskies to an 11-6 win over Coastal Carolina. Β
Β
"It was awesome," Kahle said of his first grand slam since as far back as he can remember. "And with the crowd getting involved, it was big moment for some momentum change."
Β
The blast not only gave the upstart Huskies momentum in the game, it gives them a huge boost heading into Sunday's action. Β The victory kept Washington (32-23) on the right side of the winner's bracket for the NCAA Conway Regional and puts the Huskies one win away from advancing to their first-ever Super Regional.
Β
They will play on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. PT against the winner of a loser-out, 9:00 a.m. (PT) game between Coastal Carolina and No. 2 seed Connecticut.
Β
Coastal Carolina, who were the visitors despite playing on their home field at Springs Brooks Stadium, struck first in the second inning. AfterΒ Lucas KnowlesΒ walked Zach Biermann and Kieton Rivers sacrificed him into scoring position, left fielder Lee Sponseller hit a double into the left-center gap scoring Biermann easily for an early 1-0 Chanticleer's lead. It would be the only lead of the game for the top-seeded team.
Β
Washington answered in a big way tallying six runs in the second inning to take what looked like a commanding lead. They got their first runs on anΒ AJ GraffaninoΒ RBI single andΒ Mason CerrilloΒ sacrifice fly before Kahle stepped up and provided the big blow.
Β
He deposited Bilous' (7-3) fastball that caught too much of plate over the wall in right-center field for the Huskies first grand slam home run of the year. It was Kahle's fifth blast of the year β all coming since May 12 β and the Huskies' first grand slam sinceΒ Willie MacIverΒ on March 26, 2017 against Oregon.
Β
It gave the Huskies a 6-1 advantage, but the Chants began pecking away at the lead right away. CCU strung together a walk, two singles and a double to score three times in the third inning and cut the Huskies' lead to 6-4.
Β
The Huskies got back to a three-run lead in the fourth when freshmanΒ Braiden WardΒ manufactured a run. He reached safely on a bunt single, stole his Pac-12 leading 17thΒ base to get into scoring position and came home on a Kahle single into the left-field corner.Β
Β
The Chants would not back down, though. They would get single runs in the fifth and sixth innings off ofΒ Josh BurgmannΒ to claw to within a run, 7-6, before the Huskies opened the lead back up.
Β
The Diamond Dawgs would score twice in the sixth and seventh innings to get to their final five run advantage.
Β
In the sixth,Β Joe WainhouseΒ hit his team-leading 16thΒ home run of the season, a two-run shot over the 20-foot high wall in centerfield. His blast was his second of the Regional and 10thΒ in 14 games. It gave the Huskies some much needed breathing room and also added Wainhouse to an exclusive list as just the seventh player to hit a homer over the tall wall in centerfield.
Β
The Huskies would string together four hits in the seventh inning β three after there were two outs β to get some more breathing room.Β Jonathan SchifferΒ doubled homeΒ Willie MacIver, who doubled earlier in the inning, andΒ Mason CerrilloΒ followed with run-scoring single.
Β
In all, the Huskies pounded out 14 hits, led by three from Ward (3-for4, three runs, stolen base). KahleΒ was one of four players to have two hits, and the catcher also equaled a career high with five runs batted in.
UW also reached double figures in runs for the second-consecutive game at the Regional. It was the Huskkes highest scoring output in the post-season since 1994.
Β
On the mound, Burgmann (2-2) entered the game in the fourth and went 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win.Β Stevie EmanuelsΒ pitched a perfect seventh inning and seniorΒ Alex HardyΒ went the final two innings to slam the door shut.
Β
"I am proud of our guys," Meggs said. "It's not an easy place to play under any circumstances. I give our guys a lot of credit for hanging in there. We threw a punch, they threw a punch, and we knew it was going to go down to the wire. We kept playing and kept our foot on the gas and wore them down a little at the end and that's not easy to do to a team that plays as well at home as they do."
NOTES:
--Joe WainhouseΒ is the third visiting player, seventh overall, to hit a home run over the 20-foot high wall in dead center field. The base of the wall is 390 feet from home plate.Β
--The Huskies reward for winning? Chick Fil-A for dinner and study tables. All players that have not graduated have finals to prepare for, which start on Monday.
