ASU Walks Off With 4-3 Win Over UW
May 04, 2018 | Baseball
PHOENIX, Ariz.Β β Gage Canning hit a two-out RBI double in the ninth inning to give Arizona State at walk-off 4-3 win over Washington in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Β
Spencer Torkelson, who tormented the Huskies all evening long and scored all four of ASU's runs, singled off Alex Hardy with two outs in the ninth inning and came around to score when Canning hit the first pitch he saw from reliever Josh Burgmann into the left-center field gap.
Β
Torkelson and Canning teamed up for six of Arizona State's 11 hits on the evening.
Β
The play finished off a rally from an early 2-0 deficit for the Sun Devils (19-25, 11-11 Pac-12) and sent the visiting Huskies (21-20, 11-8) back to their dugout stunned as they drop the important opening game of the Pac-12 series.
Β
Washington drew first blood, piecing together three hits and scoring twice in the second inning. Ben Baird picked up his fourth RBI of the season, laying down a perfect safety squeeze bunt that allowed Levi Jordan, who led off the inning with a single, to score. The next batter Braiden Ward drove home late addition to the lineup, KJ Brady, with a single for a 2-0 Huskies' lead.
Β
The Sun Devils cut the Huskies lead in half in the third inning β stringing together a walk and a pair of singles after there were two outs, the last by Carter Aldrete driving in Torkelson β to make it a 2-1 game.
Β
Torkelson tied the game up, 2-2, in the fifth, leading off the inning with a Pac-12 freshman record 22nd home run. Lucas Knowles had done a nice job of keeping him in check his first two time to the plate, but Torkelson took a 3-2 pitch from him to straight-away centerfield just over the wall for the game-tying blast.
Β
It would be the last run allowed by Knowles as he left with two outs in the sixth inning, tied 2-2. He scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out four over 5 2/3 innings.
Β
ASU took its first lead in the game, 3-2, scoring an unearned run in the seventh. After Torkelson had second life on a dropped ball in foul territory, he singled off Stevie Emanuels. Canning followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and set up a sticky no-out situation.
Β
Hardy relieved Emanuels and promptly induced a 6-4-3 double play, but Torkelson scored on the play.
Β
The Huskies even things back up in the eighth inning getting a two-out hit by Joe Wainhouse. Mason Cerrillo singled, moved to second on a balk and came around to score when Wainhouse dropped a bloop single in front of a sliding Hunter Bishop in right field. For Wainhouse, it was his team leading 30th RBI of the season.
But after the Huskies went down in order in the ninth, the Sun Devils mounted their rally in the ninth. Hardy (4-2) struck out the first two batters of the inning, to give him four in 2 2/3 innings, but Torkelson's single ended his night, and ultimately made him the tough-luck loser in the score book.
Β
Dellan Raish (4-1) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for ASU to earn the win.
Β
The two teams continue the series Saturday, with another 6:30 p.m. start.
