Huskies Can’t Overcome Grand Slam And Fall 6-4 To Portland
May 15, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Ryan Hoogerwerf hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to give Portland a 6-1 lead and Washington could not complete a rally and fell, 6-4, to the visiting Pilots at Husky Ballpark on Tuesday.
The Huskies (25-22), who just completed a series win over 11th-ranked UCLA, had their chances in the late innings against the Pilots (21-28), but could never get over the hump. They had the tying run on base in the seventh and eighth innings, but both times were turned back by Portland.
Connor Knutson retired the Huskies in order in the ninth to slam the door shut and earn his eighth save of the year.
Portland struck first, putting two on the board in the third inning off of freshman Jack DeCooman (0-1). Matt Kelly started the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Henry Cheney, and left fielder Cody Hawken put an exclamation point on the inning with a long home run into the trees beyond the left-field fence for his ninth blast of the year.
Senior KJ Brady single-handedly cut the Pilots lead in half to 2-1 with one swing of his bat. The UW right fielder took a 2-0 pitch from Portland starter Cameron Richman deep over the fence in right-center field for his first career home run and put a halt to Richman's perfection through the first eight batters in the lineup.
Brady's home run ended up being the base runner allowed by Richman over four innings, and his dominance proved to be key for the Pilots.
In the fifth, Portland struck for its four runs on only one hit. After two hit batters and a walk, Hoogerwerf cranked his grand slam off Dylan Lamb over the left-field wall for a 6-1 Pilots' advantage.
The Huskies got a run back in their half of the fifth to make the score 6-2 on a Willie MacIver ground out and added two more in the seventh to cut the lead to two. MacIver doubled home Levi Jordan and KJ Brady grounded into a double play that scored AJ Graffanino.
That was the closest the Huskies would get, as five Portland pitchers combined to stymie the UW offense. Tate Budnick gave up five hits and three runs, but he earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Jordan was 2-for-3 with two runs and MacIver was 1-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Huskies' offense.
The Huskies now head to Salt Lake City for their final regular season road trip of the year. They will play Utah in a three-game series starting Thursday. All three games will be carried on the Pac-12 Networks.
