Once Offense Gets Rolling, Knowles Takes Over In 6-4 Win Over Utah
May 17, 2018 | Baseball
SALT LAKE CITYΒ β Washington (26-22, 16-9 Pac-12) scored three runs in the fifth and added single runs in the next three innings to give starter Lucas Knowles enough support to help the Huskies roll to a 6-4 win over Utah (14-36, 6-19) in the opening game of a crucial Pac-12 series at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City.
Β
It took a while for Washington's offense to wake up for Thursday's 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time start, but once they got the lead it allowed Knowles to pitch free and easy. The redshirt-freshman allowed just two hits and one run until running into some trouble in the 7th inning after there were two outs.
Β
Knowles' final line was four hits, three runs β just two earned β with five strikeouts and no walks. He improved to 4-5 on the season. It was hit best outing of the year, according to Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs.
"I'm really proud of the way Lucas battled," Meggs said. "That's what you need on Friday."
Β
Knowles was able to command his fastball in the strike zone all day, putting it where ever he wanted on both sides of the plate. He also credited the environment for allowing him to be so successful on the hill.
Β
"The mound was absolutely perfect," Knowles said of Smith's Ballpark, which is shared with the Los Angeles Angels Triple-A farm team, the Salt Lake City Buzz. "I definitely felt good out there. The conditions were awesome for pitching and I just executed the pitches that Coach (Kelly) called."
Β
Both starting pitchers had allowed just one hit through four innings before both teams broke the scoreless seal in the fifth inning.
Β
Washington touched up Tanner Thomas (3-5) for three runs in its half of the inning, including two unearned runs. After AJ Graffanino started the inning with a single and advanced to second on the wild pitch, third baseman Willie MacIver broke the scoreless tie with a RBI double into the gap.
Β
After an out was recorded, MacIver scored on an error when Utah shortstop Matt Richardson threw wild to first on a ground ball by Jonathan Schiffer. Schiffer scored later in the inning on a wild pitchΒ to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Β
Utah would get a run back in their half of the fifth on a safety squeeze bunt by Matt Richardson, but the Huskies would get that run back in the sixth and add another in the seventh to take a 5-1 advantage.
Β
Graffanino and MacIver teamed up once again to account for the Huskies fourth run in the sixth. This time, Graffanino singled, stole second and advanced to third when catcher Shea Kramer's throw went into centerfield. MacIver promptly singled to center for his second hit and RBI of the game.
Β
In the seventh, Christian Jones doubled to start the inning and pinch-runner KJ Brady came around to score on a single by Huskies' lead-off man Mason Cerrillo.
Β
Up 5-1, Knowles recorded the first two outs before he allowed a single and triple β the triple sending him to the showers. Josh Burgmann allowed a double that made the score 5-3, but that was the closest Utah would get.
Β
Joe Wainhouse provided some eighth inning insurance with a solo blast to dead centerfield. It was Wainhouse's 12th home run of the year and his sixth in seven games, and it gave the Huskies a 6-3 advantage.
Β
Burgmann worked a perfect eighth and Alex Hardy came into pitch in the ninth. He allowed a final Utah run after a one-out triple and RBI groundout, but he got Wade Gulden to pop up to Levi Jordan at shortstop to end the game.
Β
The win ensures the Huskies will end the day no worse than tied for third in the Pac-12 standings with UCLA. The Bruins host Oregon this weekend.
Β
The Huskies and Utes continue their series on Friday, once again playing at 10:30 a.m. to accommodate the Salt Lake City Buzz' evening game.
