SEATTLE – No. 11 East Carolina (23-6) pounded out 15 hits and rode the arm of its ace Chris Holba to take game one of a doubleheader, 5-1, over Washington (13-13) Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Mason Cerrillo had three hits to raise his season batting average to .400, but it wasn't enough for the Huskies in their first game of an eight-game homestand.
East Carolina made themselves right at home after trekking across the country, grabbing a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out, RBI single by first baseman Spencer Brickhouse.
The Pirates maintained the lead until the Huskies struck in the fifth inning to tie the game. Ben Baird doubled to start the inning and eventually came around to score on consecutive sacrifice bunts by Braiden Ward and Noah Hsue – with Hsue earning a RBI.
ECU answered quickly in the sixth, retaking the lead on the first home run of the season for right fielder Dwayna Williams-Sutton. Lucas Knowles recorded the first two outs quickly before Williams-Sutton went the opposite way on an 0-1 pitch and lifted it just beyond the fence in right field.
The blast ended up giving East Carolina the lead for good and sent Knowles (1-3) to his third loss of the season.
The Pirates added on two more runs in the seventh when they strung together four-consecutive hits to start the inning, then tacked on another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-1.
Holba scattered eight hit over 7 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run to improve to 7-0 on the season. Ryan Ross tossed the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his fourth save of the year.
