SERIES HISTORY VS. EAST CAROLINA
Washington and East Carolina have faced each other previously just one time, with the Pirates winning that matchup, 6-3. The Huskies traveled to Greensville, N.C. in 2007 to take part in the ECU Invitational and went 1-2 in that tourney, losing to Duke and ECU, but beating St. John's. The Huskies and Pirates played Feb. 24, 2007. The Pirates scored all six of their runs late in the game to rally for the victory. UW scored twice in the first inning off Dustin Sasser and added another run in the sixth to lead 3-0. ECU scored once in the seventh and five times in the eighth to win the game.
TEAM NOTES:Β
β’ Freshman Contributions: Four different UW freshmen position players have played in at least 20 games -- each making double figure starts. Braiden Ward (22 G/16 GS), Jonathan Schiffer (20/15), Noah Hsue (21/14) and Kaiser Weiss (24/12) have shined on the field while also gaining valuable experience. On the hill, five different freshmen have also appeared in multiple games with Stevie Emanuels (13 G) and Lucas Knowles (11) reaching double-digits.
β’ Unearned Note: In 2017, the Huskies allowed 14 unearned runs over 54 games. In 25 games in 2018, they have allowed 25 unearned runs. UW has committed 30 errors a year after they led the Pac-12 and ranked 3rd nationally in fielding pct (.982) and committed 36 errors over a span of 54 games.
β’ Late Game Success: The Huskies are 12-0 when they lead or are tied after 8 innings. They are 4-0 when tied after 8 innings and 4-0 in extra-inning games.Β
β’ Pitching Note: Husky pitchers have hit a Pac-12 low 12 batters with pitches this season. They have allowed more intentional walks (14) -- which is the most by any Pac-12 staff -- than batters hit.Β
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:Β
β’ Alex Hardy is the only fifth-year senior on the team. He is having a breakout year in which he leads the Pac-12 in appearances (17) and fewest earned runs (3). He also ranks second in the Pac-12 in ERA (1.07) and fewest hits allowed (18). Hardy has not allowed a run over his last 8 appearances. Over that span of 13 innings, he has been able to lower his ERA from 2.19 to its current 1.07.
β’ Mason Cerrillo ranks sixth among Pac-12 hitters with a .380 average and is also 7th with an on-base percentage of .463. No Husky has ended a year with a batting average above .380 since Matt Hague hit .381 in 2006.
β’ Joe DeMers' next start will be the 37th of his career. That total will equal the ninth most in UW history.Β
β’ A couple players have especially upped their games in Pac-12 action. Nick Kahle leads the team with a .355 average, just above Braiden Ward who is hitting .350 in Conference action.
