SEATTLE – After dropping game one of a doubleheader, 5-1, to No. 11 East Carolina on Friday, the Washington Huskies turned to their ace Joe DeMers to reverse their fortunes and the junior did not disappoint.
The right-hander out of Martinez, Calif., threw a five-hit, complete-game, 8-0, shutout as the Huskies (14-13) beat the Pirates (23-7) to earn a split for the day at Husky Ballpark.
DeMers (3-1) struck out seven and allowed only six baserunners all night – none of which reached past second base. He allowed a base runner in each of the first five innings, but after a lead-off single in the fifth, he set down 12-straight batters.
The streak was stopped in the ninth inning on a one-out single by Jeremy Whitehead, but DeMers coaxed Brady Lloyd to hit into a game-ending 1-6-3 double play on the very next pitch – his 103rd of the game. It was one of two double plays that DeMers started in the game.
The Husky offense gave DeMers plenty of support. They pounded out 13 hits, which was one off the team's season hight, including five for extra-bases.
Mason Cerrillo was 3-for-5 (6-for-9 in the double header), while Levi Jordan was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Noah Hsue, Christian Jones and Joe Wainhouse each had two hits.
Wainhouse got the Huskies on track in the second with a mammoth home run over the batter's eye in centerfield. Wainhouse's blast was his third of the season and came on a 2-1 pitch from ECU starter Trey Benton (4-4).
The scored remained 1-0 until the fifth when the Huskies sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Dawgs had six hits in the inning, including three-straight doubles by Cerrillo, Jordan and Nick Kahle. Jordan's double scored a pair of runs. Wainhouse picked up his second RBI of the game with a single and Jones capped the scoring with an infield single.
Washington would score three insurance runs after there were two outs in the eighth inning to give DeMers even more breathing room. Hsue singled home the first run, followed by a Cerrillo RBI knock and Jordan RBI double.
The Huskies and Pirates will wrap up the short two-day, three-game series with a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
