No. 11 ECU Rides Three Homers For 7-2 Win Over UW
April 07, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE โย Designated hitter Bryant Packard homered twice and drove in four runs to lift No. 11 East Carolina (24-7) to a series-clinching 7-2 win over Washington on Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
ย
Packard hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the fifth inning and added solo blast in the eighth as part of a 4-for-5 day to provide all the offensive support Pirates' starting pitcher Tyler Smith would need.
ย
Smith (5-0) mixed a sinker and change-up to Husky hitters, keeping them off balance all day. He allowed three hits โ two of which were infield singles โ and only two balls reached the outfield over his seven innings of work.
The Huskies (14-14) broke the ice in the fourth inning, manufacturing a run to take the 1-0 lead. Levi Jordan walked, stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Joe Wainhouse. First baseman Willie MacIver sent Jordan home with two outs when he beat out a ground ball to third for an infield single.
ย
The lead didn't last long for the Huskies as ECU strung together three hits in the fifth, the last one a three-run home run by Packard. The left-handed hitting sophomore took a 1-1 pitch from Jordan Jones (3-3) and smacked it over the right field wall for his fifth home run of the season and a 3-1 lead.
ย
The Pirates added another run to the scoreboard on a two-out RBI single by Drew Henrickson in the sixth inning and also sent Jones to the bench trailing 4-1. Jones went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits.
ย
ECU expanded its lead to 7-1 in the eighth inning with three runs off Alex Hardy on a pair of homers. Packard led off with his second blast of the game and three batters later catcher Jake Washer deposited a ball into the bullpen in left field for two-run blast.
ย
Smith turned the game over to the Pirates' bullpen and the Huskies' bats immediately went to work. They loaded the bases before any outs were recorded, but had to settle for just a single run on a Mason Cerrillo sacrifice fly that made the score 7-2.
ย
Braiden Ward went 2-for-2 at the plate, accounting for one-third of the Huskies six hits on the day.
ย
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday with a quick two-day series against Gonzaga at Husky Ballpark. Both games are scheduled to start at 6:05 p.m.
