Huskies Score Four Times In The Ninth To Send Cougars Home With Series Loss
April 29, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE – In baseball, each team gets 27 outs and the Huskies needed every single one of them in game two of a doubleheader at Husky Ballpark on Sunday.
Washington (20-19, 11-7 Pac-12) scored four times in the ninth inning to rally for a 6-5 win over Washington State (14-23, 6-12), in a wild rubber-match finish to the Boeing Apple Cup Series of baseball.
Braiden Ward, who tied the game up with a RBI single, scored on a wild pitch by Collin Maier, setting off a jubilant Husky celebration at home plate.
The Huskies, who trailed 5-1 entering the eighth inning, avoided a doubleheader sweep and accomplished a series win over the Cougars. It ended a streak of three-straight series victories by the Cougars.
"They pitched us really well for 17 innings," said Lindsay Meggs, who earned his 250th win as the Huskies head coach. "But like I told our guys, sometimes we're not going to win every inning.
"Sometimes it only takes one or two innings, so we have to keep pushing and stay with it, stay with our approach, and you find the opportunity. All of a sudden, all hell breaks loose and you win a series, so I'm happy for our guys."
Things looked bleak for the Huskies in the ninth as Washington State had its closer Ryan Walker on the mound with a three-run lead. But Christian Jones followed a lead-off walk to Levi Jordan with a booming home run to left-center field that made it a one-run ballgame.
After Jonathan Schiffer was hit by a pitch and Ben Baird sacrificed pinch-runner Jack Johnson into scoring position, Cougars Coach Marty Lees went to his bullpen and brought in lefty Cody Anderson.
Ward greeted Anderson with a single to right that scored Johnson to tie the game, and Ward took second when right fielder Blake Canton booted the ball.
After Mason Cerrillo reached on an infield single that moved Ward to third, Maier entered the game to face Nick Kahle and threw a pitch in the dirt that got away from catcher Robert Teel, allowing Ward to score.
"My mind went blank, but I knew to go home so I just ran as fast as I could," Ward said of what he saw on the wild pitch.
The rally made a winner out of senior Alex Hardy, who improved to 4-1 on the season and 10-1 for his UW career.
Washington State jumped ahead in the third inning, 2-0, scoring a couple of unearned runs off starter Jordan Jones. The Huskies had two errors – both throwing – keeping the inning alive long enough for Justin Harrer to drive in a run on a single. The Cougars got another run on the play when Ward's throw in from centerfield hit Mason De La Cruz as he was sliding into third base, allowing him to get up and scamper home.
Ward atoned for his early mistake in the sixth inning, breaking up Parker McFadden's no-hit bid with a bunt base hit. He eventually came around to score on Kahle's single, a hit that extended his hit streak to 11-straight games.
But, the Cougars got that run back and then some in the seventh inning. Clanton took an 0-2 pitch from Josh Burgmann the opposite way and over the Cougars' bullpen in left field for a three-run homer and 5-1 lead. It was his second homer in the doubleheader and his fifth of the season.
The Huskies got a run back in the eighth when Kahle scored from first after Joe Wainhouse doubled and JJ Hancock booted the ball in center. It proved to be a huge run as it cut the Cougars lead to 5-2.
The Cougars outhit the Huskies, 8-7, in game two. Ward (2-for-5, 2 runs, RBI) was the lone Husky to have multi-hits in the night cap.
Washington dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 4-1, and was in desperate need of a win in the second game to stay in the upper half of the Pac-12 standings and keep its RPI in NCAA Tournament range.
Washington will face Seattle University on Tuesday, May 1 at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue at 1:30 p.m. before heading down to Arizona for a three-games series at Arizona State.
They still have home series against top-25 teams Stanford and UCLA, plus a road series at Utah.
