DeMers Strikes Out 10, But Homers Lift WSU To 4-1 Win
April 29, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Joe DeMers struck out a career high 10 batters, but Washington State hit a pair of home runs off him and beat the host Huskies, 4-1, in game one of a double header Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
DeMers (3-3) allowed six hits, walked two and allowed four earned runs, but Cougars starter Scotty Sunitsch (5-1) outdueled him on the hill. The senior lefty allowed four hits, a walk and struck out eight over 7 1/3 innings to earn the win.
DeMers retired the first eight Cougars (14-22, 6-11 Pac-12) he faced until giving up an infield single to No. 9 hitter Mason De La Cruz. Dillon Plew followed with a double into the left-center gap that allowed De La Cruz to score and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived as the Huskies (19-19, 10-7) answered with a tying run in their half of the third. Braiden Ward walked, stole his team-high 10th base of the year and came around to score on a two-out single by Levi Jordan. It was the only run the Huskies would muster off of Sunitsch.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the fourth on a two-run homer by right fielder Blake Canton that gave his team a 3-1 lead. It was Canton's fourth of the season.
Justin Harrer added a solo shot in the sixth off DeMers for a 4-1 advantage.
Washington tried to rally in the eighth inning loading the bases, but reliever Ryan Walker got Joe Wainhouse swinging to end the threat.
