Huskies Wrap Up Seven-Game Road Swing With 6-4 Loss To Aztecs
April 02, 2018 | Baseball
SAN DIEGO, Calif.Β βΒ San Diego State scored four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a one-run deficit and hung on for a 6-4 win over visiting Washington in a non-conference game Tuesday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Β
No. 3 hitter Chase Calabuig led the charge for the Aztecs (19-9) with three hits β all doubles. The heart of San Diego State's order accounted for most of the damage with multi-hit games from the two-through-six hitters.
Β
Washington (13-12) grabbed the lead first when Willie MacIver broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly. Levi Jordan led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by catcher Joe Fitzhugh trying to catch him stealing. MacIver hit a pitch from starter Justin Goosen-Brown deep enough to right that allowed Jordan to score easily.
Β
The Aztecs answered back in their half of the fourth with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 advantage. The first four San Diego State hitters reached on hits off Chris Micheles, including a RBI infield single by Dean Nevarez to get their first run. Third baseman Casey Schmitt plated the second run on a sacrifice fly.
Β
Those would be the only runs allowed by Micheles in a solid 4 1/3 inning appearance. He struck out one and allowed six hits in arguably his best appearance of the season. He left trailing 2-1, but the offense would take him off the hook in the sixth inning.
Β
In the sixth, designated hitter Christian Jones came through with a clutch two-out hit with the bases-loaded off of Jacob Erickson that gave the Huskies a 3-2 advantage. The Huskies loaded the bases on reliever Adrian Mardueno thanks to a couple of walks and a MacIver single before Jones beat the infield shift with a single through the hole at shortstop.
Β
The lead was short-lived as the Aztecs sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. The big inning was assisted by a Husky error that made three of the runs unearned, but the Aztecs did have five hits off Stevie Emanuels (4-2) in the frame. Calabuig laced his third double of the game to score two runs for the big blow.
Β
The Huskies trimmed a run off the lead in the seventh on a Mason Cerrillo single that scored Braiden Ward, but that would be the last sniff UW would have at scoring.
Β
Schmitt moved from third base to the mound and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing two baserunners, to pick up a save. Jacob Erickson (2-1) picked up the win despite giving up three hits while retiring just two batters.
Β
Ward, MacIver and Cerrillo were each 2-for-3 at the plate to lead UW's nine-hit attack. Ward also had a pair of stolen bases. Β
Β
The Huskies return home and will play their next eight games at Husky Ballpark, starting Friday against top-25 ranked East Carolina at 6:00 p.m. The Dawgs will play three games over two days against the Pirates, followed by two midweek games against Gonzaga and a three-game series against. Oregon.
Β
NOTES: Joe Wainhouse, Ben Baird and KJ Brady were all out of the lineup after suffering injuries during the USC series. The Huskies have had their fill of the injuries this year as starting shortstop AJ Graffanino has been out for almost a month. The Huskies did get Willie MacIver back in the lineup during the road trip for his first appearances in the field of the year. MacIver was 5-for-14 (.357) during his first action of the season.
