UW Falls In DQ Classic Final, 7-1, To Illinois
March 04, 2018 | Baseball
MINNEAPOLIS – Illinois scored four runs in the first inning before Washington even picked up a bat and cruised to a 7-1 win to earn the unofficial title as tournament champions of the Dairy Queen Pac-12/Big Ten Baseball Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
The Huskies (6-4) and Illini (6-3) each entered Sunday 2-0, but it was Illinois that came out of the gates on fire. The Illini tallied their first four runs – only one earned – off UW starter Jordan Jones by stringing together four hits and benefitted from an error at first base. The biggest blow came from No. 7 hitter, catcher Jeff Korte, who doubled home a pair of runs after there were two outs.
Jones (1-2) allowed a double to lead off the second before he would go on to set down the next 11 Illinois hitters in order. He struck out the first two batters he faced in the fifth inning to equal his previous career high of nine, but things unraveled from there.
Jones issued a four-pitch walk to Jack Yalowitz to snap his streak of setting down 11-straight and then allowed a run-scoring double to Bren Spillane and a RBI single to Michael Massey.
Freshman Dylan Lamb came in to replace Jones and set down the first seven Illinois batters he faced, but Washington's offense could never mount together any sustained threats off of Illini starting pitcher Ty Weber. The Huskies put pressure on Weber in the first and second innings, but the Illini sophomore turned them away and settled down as the game continued.
The Huskies finally got to Weber in the eighth inning, loading the bases with no outs to chase him from the game. But reliever Ryan Schmitt got a strikeout and double play to hold the Huskies to just one run.
Weber (2-0) allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out one over seven innings.
Junior Mason Cerrillo was 3-for-4 at the plate to record the only multi-hit game for the Huskies.
Four Washington pitchers combined to strikeout 14 Illini batters.
Washington will return home for its next eight games. They welcome in Seattle U on Tuesday for their only visit to Husky Ballpark this season. The game is scheduled for a 6:05 first pitch and will be Dollar Dog night.
