Redhawks Use Home Runs To Down Dawgs, 8-3
March 06, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE βΒ Seattle University used a pair of home runs to jump-start its offense and rally past Washington, 8-3, Tuesday at Husky Ballpark. Dalton Hurd hit a three-run blast in the fourth inning and Kyler Murphy hit a two-run homer in the seventh to erase a 3-0 early deficit and lift the Redhawks (8-5) past the Huskies (6-5).
Β
Seattle U added three runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.
Β
Washington was able to take advantage of Seattle U starter Brayden Weyer's wildness in the first inning and scored three runs with the benefit of just one hit. After Braiden Ward and Kaiser Weiss walked to start the game, Nick Kahle extended his hit streak to seven games with a double that scored Ward. Weiss eventually scored on a wild pitch and Kahle was plated by a Joe Wainhouse sacrifice fly off reliever Austin Hansen.
Β
Those turned out to be the only runs of the game for the host Huskies as they managed seven hits and stranded 11 base runners on the night. Mason CerrilloΒ (2-for-4) was the only Husky with multi-hits.
Β
Weyer lasted just five batters, recording one out, but his offense would take him off the hook a few innings later.
Β
The Huskies kept the 3-0 advantage until the fourth when Hurd connected for his three-run homer off UW starter Lucas Knowles. Knowles had retired seven-straight batters before allowing a lead-off double to Curtis Perrin. Sean Sutton reached on a one-out single and both runners came around on Hurd's blast over the left-field fence.
Β
Those were the only three runs that Knowles allowed over 4 1/3 innings in his first collegiate start. The redshirt-freshman gave up four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two.
Β
The score remained 3-3 until the bottom of the order struck against UW reliever Leo Nierenberg (0-1) in the seventh. After No. 8 hitter Jack Reisinger drew a walk, Murphy smacked the first pitch he saw into the night sky and over the right field wall to make it a 5-3 ballgame.
Β
Washington loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but were unable to push anything across the board and Seattle U answered with a three-spot in the ninth to end any hopes of a late Husky miracle.
Β
Tyler Oldenberg (3-1) pitched 3 2/3 innings to earn the win and Zach Wolf threw the final 2 1/3 innings to earn his third save of the season.
Β
Washington continue their home stand with seven more games. They host Illinois State for four games, starting Friday and running through Monday.
