Huskies Drop Series Opener, 3-2, To Redbirds
March 09, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Illinois State broke a tie in the eighth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over host Washington at Husky Ballpark on Friday night.
Redbirds' centerfielder John Rave drove home the winning run, Noah Sadler, with a single off UW pitcher Stevie Emanuels in the eighth inning. Sadler, who homered earlier in the game, walked and moved all the way to third base on consecutive wild pitches by losing pitcher, Leo Nierenberg (0-2), before scoring on Rave's single.
Illinois State (6-4) led 2-0 before the Huskies (6-6) tied things up in the sixth inning on one swing of the bat. Joe Wainhouse drilled a two-run shot that erased the deficit and put the Huskies in position for a comeback.
Washington was behind the eight-ball all night as they were able to only get three innings out of their ace, Joe DeMers, and had to use eight pitchers total on the night. He exited the game for precautionary reasons due to discomfort in his right leg. The junior righty who threw a perfect game the last time he took the hill at Husky Ballpark allowed one hit, a pair of walks and struck out four batters in his 58-pitch stint.
DeMers' replacement on the hill, freshman Dylan Lamb, was greeted rudely by the first batter he faced in the fourth, Sadler. The Redbirds' clean-up hitter homered deep to right field on a 3-2 count to give his team a 1-0 advantage.
Illinois State added another run in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead, but Washington answered back in its half of the frame to tie the game up.
With one on and one out, Wainhouse connected on the first pitch he saw from ISU starter Brady Huffman to deliver a home run over the right-field fence. His blast was the first by a Husky this season and also scored Mason Cerrillo, who led-off the inning with a double.
Those proved to be the only runs of the game for the Huskies, who were held to five hits and stranded 10 base runners on the night. Washington has dropped a season-high three-straight games.
Trevor Cross (1-1) pitched an inning for Illinois State to pick up the win and Kyle Pauly retired the final four Husky batters to pick up his first save of the season.
