Bats Come Alive In Huskies 7-1 Win Over Arizona
March 16, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE โย Mason Cerrillo had three hits and three RBI and Ben Baird had four hits and scored three runs to lead the Huskies to a 7-1 win over Arizona in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
ย
Cerrillo, who had no runs batted in entering the day, picked up RBI hits in three consecutive at bats. Baird entered the game hitting .156 but lifted his season average to .224 with his four hits.
ย
"We're happy for those guys because they work really hard," said Husky coach Lindsay Meggs. "Mason has been taking good swings all year. He's just had some tough luck with runners in scoring position. And Ben's been slowly coming back and for both those guys to have success tonight, that's a great thing for us."
ย
On paper, the Huskies looked like they were in for a daunting task. Arizona had won five-straight games, while the Huskies had lost five of their last six. The Wildcats (10-7, 0-1 Pac-12) were running out their ace pitcher, Cody Deason, and his 1.03 earned run average to the hill. The Huskies (8-8, 1-0) were sending freshman Jack DeCooman to the mound for his first career start and third ever college appearance in place of UW's sidelined ace, Joe DeMers.
ย
In the early going it looked like it could be a long night for the Huskies. DeCooman got off to a rough start, but was able to minimize the damage in the first inning. He loaded the bases with one out and held the Wildcats to just one run on a sacrifice fly. It ended up being the only run of the game for the Wildcats, who had scored no fewer than six runs during their five-game win streak.
ย
The game remained 1-0 in Arizona's favor until the third inning when Cerrillo delivered a clutch two-out double into the left field corner that scored Baird from second base. Cerrillo was far from done on the night.
ย
He was back at it in the fifth inning when he collected his second RBI of the game off Deason (2-1). He singled home one run โ once again Baird from second โ and the Huskies tacked on another for good measure when left fielder Ryan Haug threw to an unoccupied third base allowing Braiden Ward to scamper home all the way from first.
ย
The sequence made the score 3-1 in the Huskies' favor and clearly swung the tide in the home team's favor.
ย
UW broke the game open in the seventh when they sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs. Ward, Cerrillo, Joe Wainhouse and Nick Kahle all had RBI hits off Arizona reliever Josh Haley to make the score 7-1.
ย
Four different Huskies' pitchers combined to hold the Wildcats' offense down and limit them to seven hits.
ย
DeCooman ended up going 3 1/3 innings allowing four hits, walking three and the one earned run. Dylan Lamb (1-0) followed DeCooman on the hill and only allowed two bases on balls over 2 1/3 innings. The freshman earned the first win of his college career.
ย
Alex Hardy scattered three hits over 2 1/3 innings and Jordan Jones pitched a perfect ninth to hammer down the Huskies win.
ย
The Huskies and Wildcats continue their series with a Saturday first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
