Huskies Walk-Off Wildcats On Weiss’ Hit
March 17, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Freshman Kaiser Weiss hit a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to break a scoreless deadlock and send the host Washington Huskies to a series-clinching 1-0 win over the Arizona Wildcats at Husky Ballpark on Saturday.
The Huskies (9-8, 2-0 Pac-12) loaded the bases off of Wildcats' (10-8, 0-2) reliever Michael Flynn in the ninth without the benefit of a hit, setting the table for Weiss' heroics.
Joe Wainhouse walked to start the inning and pinch-runner Willie MacIver made it safely down to second when Flynn threw Ben Baird's bunt back to the mound into centerfield for an error. After a passed ball allowed both runners to move into scoring position, Arizona elected to walk KJ Brady intentionally to set up a force out at any base.
Flynn (2-1) fell behind 3-0 to Weiss before working the count full. Weiss was sitting fastball and got one he liked, taking it back up the box for the game-winning hit and setting off a wild celebration on the infield. For Weiss, the walk-off was his first that he could recall ever hitting.
"It's great," said Weiss through the cheers of his teammates. "I have always wanted to be the guy who gets dog piled on at the end of a game. It's been a dream of mine."
The win guaranteed a series win for the Huskies and set up the possibility of a sweep with sophomore Jordan Jones taking the hill one week after throwing an 11 strikeout, complete-game win over Illinois State.
The game was a pitcher's duel until the Huskies finally broke through for the win. Neither team had allowed a base runner to reach third until the Huskies' ninth inning.
The Huskies received an outstanding effort on the hill from three freshmen arms. Since scoring one run in the first inning of Friday night's game, the UW pitching staff has held the Wildcats scoreless over the last 17 innings.
Starter Lucas Knowles cemented his status in the Huskies rotation, throwing 7 2/3 outstanding innings in his third start. He only allowed five base runners (three hits, two walks) and struck out four. He left in the eighth inning with two on and two out, giving way to Dylan Lamb.
"I don't think Luke could have been better," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "With Joe hurt and others struggling, he has stepped up and occupied a spot in the rotation. He's throwing quality pitches to left handers and right handers and not giving in at all."
Lamb got Cal Stevenson to fly out harmlessly to left field in the eight and recorded the first two outs of the ninth before handing the ball off to Stevie Emanuels. Emanuels needed one pitch to retire the side, but he earned the win for throwing that pitch and improved to 3-1 on the season.
The Huskies outhit Arizona, 6-4. Weiss, Braiden Ward and Christian Jones each had two hits to account for all the hits.
The Huskies and Wildcats wrap up their series with a Sunday first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
