Huskies Open Pac-12 Play Against Arizona
March 15, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE - For the third-straight year, Washington will open Pac-12 play at home. The Huskies (7-8) limp into Conference action by hosting Arizona (10-6) for a three-game series starting Friday, March 9 at 6:05 p.m. UW has lost five of its last six, but several of the Diamond Dawgs' top players have missed action during that stretch, including top-100 MLB prospects Willie MacIver and AJ Graffanino.
These are the final three games of an eight-game homestand before the Huskies head out for a seven-game road trip.
This weekend's series will be broadcast via leanStream on GoHuskies.com with Shane Lantz and Bill Abelson calling the action. Constant game updates will be tweeted @UW_Baseball and fans can find all links at GoHuskies.com. Also, check for live look-in coverage at Facebook.com/UWHuskyBaseball throughout the weekend.
SERIES HISTORY VS. ARIZONA
Arizona holds the all-time series lead over Washington, 33-27, but the Huskies have been working hard recently to cut into that advantage. Before being swept in 2017 -- including two games in walk-off fashion -- UW had won 10 of the previous 13 games and had taken two-out-of-three in each of the last four series meetings. Under Lindsay Meggs, the Huskies are 7-5 at home, 4-8 on the road vs. the Wildcats. The two teams first met in 1999 where the Huskies won the first two matchups of the all-time series.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• In his first 527 career at bats, Levi Jordan had two career home runs. After he had two home runs last Saturday vs. Illinois State and added a third the next day, he has three HRs in his last seven at bats.
• Nick Kahle is tied for the Pac-12 lead with 7 doubles. In five games last week, he was 4-for-20 with all hits being doubles. Kahle started the year 1-for-14 (.071) over the first four games, but has hits in 10-of-the-last-11 to raise his average to .250.
• Joe Wainhouse is the first player in Lindsay Meggs' nine years at Washington to both pitch and hit. He made his first two appearances of 2018 on the mound last week vs. Illinois State, coming in for late relief while also serving as the designated hitter. The Huskies last true two-way player was Brian Pearl in 2009.
• Freshman Braiden Ward is tied for the Pac-12 lead with five stolen bases. The last Husky to lead the Conference in stolen bases was Braiden Bishop (21) in 2014.
• Five Huskies have current streaks of reaching base in 10-or-more straght games: Mason Cerrillo (13), Nick Kahle (12), Jonathan Schiffer, AJ Graffanino and Braiden Ward (10 each).
• Jordan Jones enters the weekend as the Pac-12 leader in strikeouts with 28. In his last two starts, he has struck out 20 hitters, including a career high 11 in a 5-2 complete-game win over Illinois last Saturday.
• Leo Nierenberg is tied for the Pac-12 lead and is tied for third nationally with 11 appearances on the mound.
• Joe DeMers leads the Pac-12 and ranks 12th nationally with a 0.35 ERA. He also ranks fourth nationally with a 0.55 WHIP.
TEAM NOTES:
• Home Sweet Home: Going all the way back to 1999, the Huskies have opened Conference action at home just seven times (2017, 2016, 2012, 2010, 2003, 2001, 1999). The Huskies have won each of those three-game series -- three by sweeps.
• Homer Hungry: The Huskies were the last Pac-12 team to hit a home run this season, not connecting until their 13th game of the year. They ended up with five against Illinois State, and move ahead of WSU and Ariz and are tied with Utah for homers.
• DQ Classic Recap: The Huskies were 2-1 in the Dairy Queen Pac-12/Big Ten Baseball Classic, beating Michigan State (W, 4-3, 10 inn.) on Friday and Minnesota (W, 6-4, 10 inn.) on Saturday before falling in Sunday's finale to Illinois (L, 7-1). Joe Wainhouse (.308, 2 RBI) and Kaiser Weiss (.375, 3x8, 2 2B, 2 runs, RBI, .583 ob%) were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Mason Cerrillo was the Silver Stick Award winner for having the top batting average (.625, 5x8, 2B).
