February 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington ran into a red-hot shooting Oregon State squad which used a three-point barrage en route to a 95-57 victory over the Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
The Huskies drop to 7-18 on the season on the heels of their sixth-straight loss and drop to 1-13 in Pac-12 play. The 16th-ranked Beavers improve to 19-6 overall and to 10-4 in the conference.
Washington received a team-high 18 points from sophomore Amber Melgoza, who added eight rebounds and three assists. Jenna Moser and Khayla Rooks each contributed nine points while Kierra Collier scored eight points.
Oregon State just seemed to be unable to miss from outside, hitting 18 three-pointers to set a program record and tie UW's record for most in a Pac-12 game. Kat Tudor led the way by hitting 7-of-9 and finishing with a game-high 23 points. She was one of six Beavers to score in double figures. However, the Huskies did manage to hold another all-conference opponent well under their season low as Marie Gulich scored a season-low five points in the contest.
Hannah Johnson opened the scoring for the Huskies with a three-pointer after Oregon State got on the board with a bucket. After exchanging baskets, Oregon State took command, hitting six three-pointers in a row to spark a long 27-3 run over the next eight minutes and led 35-11 after the first quarter.
Oregon State continued the three-point barrage early in the second quarter, hitting three-pointers on its first three possessions to continue to pull away. The Huskies got on the board in the quarter with a fast-break three by Mai-Loni Henson. After the Beavers scored five, Washington got back-to-back three-pointers by Moser and Rooks, keying an 8-3 run to close out the half for the Huskies, who trailed 52-22 after one.
The game proved to be a three-point affair as the teams combined to hit 18 three-pointers and just seven two-pointers. Oregon State connected on 12-of-19 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes while the Huskies hit 6-of-17. Washington was just 2-of-17 inside three-point range in the first half.
Oregon State continued its run into the third quarter, opening the second half on a 13-4 run. Moser scored four-straight points for the Huskies and outscored the Beavers 7-5 over a five-minute run but still trailed 75-33 after three periods.
The Huskies kept up the fight and battled hard in the fourth quarter to close the gap, outscoring the Beavers 24-20 in the period. Melgoza scored 13 of her 18 points in the final quarter, hitting 5-of-7 from the field with Collier scoring all eight of her points over the final 10 minutes.
Washington forced 16 turnovers in the game while turning the ball over a season-low six times. The Huskies were able to turn those OSU miscues into 15 points.
Washington heads back on the road next week, battling the mountain schools beginning with a stop in Colorado on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
