SEATTLE - Moving back up the Pac-12 standings after four wins in a row, the 20th-ranked Huskies will look to keep climbing this week as they begin their final homestand. Four matches remain in the regular season, and the next three will be in Alaska Airlines Arena starting this Friday night against California at 7 p.m. Then Sunday the Dawgs will host No. 2 Stanford, already having clinched the conference title, in a 1 p.m. showdown.
Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks, but only on the Pac-12 Washington station.
The Huskies have followed a five-match skid with four straight wins to get to 17-9 and 9-7 in the Pac-12, moving up to fifth-place and one-game behind WSU and Oregon in third. The last three wins have come against ranked opponents, defeating then-No. 21 Arizona, then-No. 13 USC, and then-No. 21 UCLA to get to 8-6 this year against top-25 opposition.
For the second straight week the Dawgs earned some Pac-12 Player of the Week honors. Samantha Drechsel was named Offensive Player of the Week for the first time after she led UW with 30 kills last week in Los Angeles while hitting .455. Avie Niece also earned Defensive Player of the Week for the first time as she had seven blocks against USC and six against UCLA. Sophomore Lauren Sanders could have just as easily won Offensive Player of the Week as she hit .543 last week with 23 kills, a 3.29 kills per set average. Ella May Powell also set the Dawgs to a .290 attack percentage last week and averaged 12.80 assists per set.
The Bears have posted a 6-10 record thus far in conference, winning two of their past three matches, beating Utah and Oregon State before falling to Oregon last time out in a match that included two "deuce sets" that went Oregon's way. Cal is fifth in the league hitting .231 but 11th in opponent hitting as they give up a .236 mark. Senior Mima Mirkovic leads the Bears with 3.37 kills per set and she had 17 against the Ducks in just three sets. Preslie Anderson is third in conference hitting .378 and Lauren Forte is close behind in seventh at .344. Sophomore setter Isabel Potter is ninth in assists with 7.93 per set. The Huskies swept the first meeting in Berkeley with a .323 team attack percentage. Both teams served touch, with nine UW aces and seven for Cal. Avie Niece had a career-high 13 kills and hit .667.
The Cardinal (24-1, 16-0 Pac-12) remain unbeaten since an opening weekend five set loss at No. 1 BYU. Stanford has only gone to five sets once since then, at home against Colorado. In Pac-12 play the Cardinal are No. 1 in hitting percentage at .307 and opponent attack percentage at .164. Stanford also has a big lead in blocks per set at 3.45 and is third in aces at 1.42. Junior Kathryn Plummer, the defending Pac-12 Player of the Year leads the conference with 5.13 kills per set. Senior Tami Alade is hitting .386 and averaging 1.82 blocks to lead the conference in both categories and junior setter Jenna Gray also leads with 12.47 assists per set. Junior libero Mogan Hentz is third in digs at 4.91. Stanford swept UW in Palo Alto earlier this year as the Huskies struggled on offense, hitting just .112. Last season the Huskies gave the Cardinal their only loss in Pac-12 play with a 3-1 win in Seattle.
