PALO ALTO, Calif. --- Washington tried to rally back from a two-goal halftime deficit, dominating play through the first 25 minutes of the second half, but was unable to complete the comeback, falling 3-1 at No. 12 Stanford on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies lose for just the second time in their last five matches, falling to 8-7-0 and to 3-4-0 in the Pac-12. The Cardinal improve to 8-2-4 and to 5-1-1 in conference action.
After falling behind early, the Huskies jumped all over the Cardinal to start the second half, outshooting Stanford 11-1 through the first 25 minutes of the period including tallying a goal to make it a 2-1 game in the 68th minute. However, the Cardinal would tally a big insurance goal in the 73rd minute and held off the Husky charge for the victory.
Stanford got on the board first, scoring a goal just three minutes into the match. Amir Bashti stole the ball from a UW defender near midfield and sent if forward. Bryce Logan came off his line hard to try to clear it, but Bashti tapped it around him then slotted it into the open goal for the early lead.
The Cardinal added to their lead in the 26th minute, again forcing a UW turnover and creating an odd-man rush, finished by Zach Ryan. Logan got piece off the shot making a dive to his left but was unable to keep it out of the goal.
Washington opened the second half with a strong showing, generating the first seven shots of the half, but was unable to find the back of the net. The Huskies best chances came in the first minute as Dylan Teves had a couple of great shots from runs down the left side. However, both ended up being saved by the Stanford keeper.
In the 56th minute, Teves made a great move at the top of the box and slotted a pass to Blake Bodily on the left side. The sophomore beat the keeper by sliding a shot back across his body to the far post but missed the post wide.
Teves continued to create a number of chances as the second half went on, drawing free kicks just outside of the box on two different occasions, but both free kicks would miss the mark.
The Huskies finally got on the board in the 68th minute and it came on another great play by Teves. The freshman charged in from the left side but was taken down just outside of the box. Scott Menzies took the free kick, which deflected off the top of the wall and in to the goal to make it a 2-1 game.
In the 72nd minute, the Huskies appeared to have another free kick chance just outside of the box as Kyle Coffee was blocked off a run with a hard shoulder to the chest. But the referee signaled to play on and Stanford had a chance after being fouled just on the other side of the midfield line. On that kick, Tanner Beason got a head on the ball and knocked it just over the hand of Logan and into the net.
"Credit to Stanford today, they took their chances," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "I felt like we were in control of the game and then two crazy turnovers led to the first two chances and in a blink of an eye, it was 2-0. We lost the grip of the game for the next 20 minutes, but we came back out in the second half and were unbelievable. I think we were still good enough to get another few but their goalkeeper stood on his head today, so credit to him."
Washington begins a four-game home stand to close out the season by hosting No. 22 UCLA in a key Pac-12 showdown on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
