The Washington Huskies At A Glance
The Huskies being a four-match home stand to wrap up the 2018 regular season this week, hosting a pair of big Pac-12 matches. First up, Washington battles UCLA on Thursday, October 25 at 8:00 p.m. The match is being broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with Aaron Heinzen and Temryss Lane on the call. The Huskies are celebrating International Night on Thursday with many giveaways and special events going on all night. The Bruins downed the Huskies on an early goal in Westwood two weeks ago, holding on for a 1-0 victory.
Sunday, the Huskies welcome San Diego State to Husky Soccer Stadium for a 4:00 p.m. match against the Aztec. That match can also be seen on the Pac-12 Network with Ann Schatz and Temryss Lane calling the action. Washington escaped San Diego with a 2-1 victory when the teams battled on Oct. 7 at SDSU.
The Huskies went 1-1 on its final road trip of the year, beating California 2-1 on Thursday before falling 3-1 to No. 12 Stanford on Sunday. On Thursday, a pair of freshman–Charlie Ostrem and Dylan Teves–teamed up on the first goal for the Huskies and senior Scott Menzies added the eventual match-winner as the Huskies swept the season-series with Cal for the third time in the last five years. On Sunday, UW fell behind Stanford 2-0 at the half, but cut the deficit to one in the second half after Scott Menzies' laser shot off a free kick. But despite an 11-1 edge in shots through the first 25 minutes of the half, Washington was unable to net the match-winner.
The UCLA Bruins At A Glance
The Bruins are the conference's hottest team entering the week riding a four-game winning streak to bump their record to 4-1-0 in the Pac-12 and 9-4-0 overall. UCLA has played just once since Oct. 13, beating Loyola Marymount 4-1 at home.
The Bruins' offense had struggled through the early going of the season, but has found its stride over the last four games, outscoring its opponents 8-2 over that stretch. That includes putting up four on LMU on Saturday with two coming from Matt Hundley. The freshman midfielder now leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-12 with 16 points (5 g, 6 a). UCLA is also one of two teams in the conference with a goals against average below 1 at 0.99.
Series History vs. UCLA
UCLA holds a commanding 32-15-3 record in the all-time series, including pulling out a narrow 1-0 victory when the teams met in Westwood earlier this year. Overall, Washington has won three of the last five, though the Bruins were able to snag a 1-0 overtime victory in Seattle last season. UCLA holds a 15-7-2 series edge in games played in Seattle.
The San Diego State Aztecs At A Glance
The Aztecs enter the match having won just twice over their last six matches including one with through five Pac-12 contests this year. Like UCLA, SDSU has played just once since Oct. 13, posting a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival San Diego on Friday, Oct. 19. Two seems to be the lucky number for the Aztec offense as they are 5-0-0 when scoring to or more goals. Conversely, they have dropped all five matches when allowing two or more. Junior midfielder Pablo Pelaez continues to lead the team with six goals scored and has three assists. He is tied for third in the Pac-12 in points (15), goals per game (0.50) and points per game (1.25).
While San Diego State has been strong at home, posting a 5-3-0 overall record, the Aztec's win at San Diego on the 19th was their first away from home as they have posted a 1-3-1 road record.
Series History vs. SDSU
Washington leads the series with San Diego State 18-6-8 including an 12-2-2 mark over the last 16 meetings between the two. Two weeks ago, the Huskies downed the Aztec 2-1 in a close battle in San Diego, giving UW its second-straight win at the SDSU Sports Deck. Washington is 8-1-4 all-time vs San Diego State in Seattle with the SDSU win coming in 2016 (1-0).
Of note, 13 of the 32 matches between the two schools all-time had to be decided in overtime and 23 of them have been one-goal affairs. Just two of those OT contests have come since 2014, but eight of the last nine matches between the two have been decided by one goal or less.
RPI Check-In
Washington found itself ranked No. 40 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings which came out on Monday. The Huskies are one of four teams in the Top 40 with Stanford in a No. 13, UCLA sitting at No. 18, and Oregon State checking in at No. 30. UW opponents Portland (No. 15), Maryland (No. 19), Denver (No. 28), and Akron (No. 48) also are in the top 50.
Injuries Piling Up
The Huskies have been dealing with injuries throughout the year, but have really been hit hard over the last week. Junior goalkeeper Saif Kerawala has missed the last four matches due to an injury suffered in the match against Cal (10/11). The Huskies' center back tandem of senior Quentin Pearson (end of Stanford match 10/14) and freshman Ethan Bartlow (both matches in Bay area) missed time last week due to concussions. Also, junior Joey Parish, who has turned into the team's utility man this year, has missed the past two games as well. Overall, just five players have appeared in all 15 matches for the Huskies this year.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington has found success when scoring the first goal of the match, going 8-1-0 when scoring first. (The lone loss was the 3-2, 2 OT loss vs Stanford.) On the other hand, the Huskies are 0-6-0 when conceding the first goal.
Dominating Defense
Washington's defense has been impressive this season, allowing just 20 goals and posting five shutouts through 15 matches. The Huskies haven't just held teams from scoring, but have held teams from taking many shots at all. Washington has allowed just 61 total shots on goal through 15 matches (4.07 per match) and 142 shots overall (9.5 per match). The Huskies have held 10 opponents to 10 shots or fewer this season including five of its seven Pac-12 opponents. Washington has also limited 10 of its opponents to five or fewer shots on goal.
That's Just Offensive, Man
The Washington offense has been impressive throughout the season, scoring 23 goals through its first 15 matches. The Huskies are averaging 1.53 goals per match thus far with a total of 13 Huskies having recorded points this season (12 of which have tallied two or more points).
Nine different players have found the back of the net for the Huskies with freshman Charlie Ostrem being the latest to score his first goal, opening the scoring at Cal last week. Scott Menzies has recorded three goals in his last four matches to lead the team with seven goals on the season. Kyle Coffee leads the team in points with 13 (4 goals, 5 assists) with four different players each adding three assists.
Last year, UW scored 40 goals–the most since tallying 45 during in 2013. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40+ goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.
Twice is Fun
Earlier this season, the Huskies posted a streak of scoring 2+ goals in eight-straight matches, dating back to last season. That matched the longest streak of games with 2+ goals since the 1991-92 season and ended up one shy of the program record of nine set during the 1981 season. Washington is 7-3-0 this season when scoring two or more goals in a match including posting a 2-1 win at California last week.
Stopping the PKs
Washington allowed its first PK goal in 62 matches when Stanford converted from the spot on Oct. 14. The Huskies hadn't allowed a PK goal by an opponent since UCLA converted two of three from the spot in Seattle on Oct. 4, 2015. Saif Kerawala has not allowed a PK in his collegiate career, stopping both attempts against him in three seasons. UW has converted all three attempts from the spot this year including two over a two-match span in mid-October in home games against Cal and Stanford.
Overtime Blues
The Huskies' played a pair of overtime matches when they were last at home including snapping a streak of five-straight overtime contests without a win by recording a 1-0 double-overtime victory vs. Cal on Oct. 11. Washington had been 0-4-1 in its last five overtime games with its last win coming in a 1-0 victory at Stanford on Oct. 30, 2016.
Record Crowd
The Huskies match against Seattle U on Sunday, drew a crowd of 2,994 fans–the fourth-largest crowd in Husky Soccer Stadium history. Three of the top four crowds to watch the Huskies came against the Redhawks including a record 3,419 fans who watch UW beat SU 2-1 in 2016.
Number 200 for Clark
UW's match vs. New Mexico on Aug. 27 was the 200th match coached by UW Head Coach Jamie Clark in 11 seasons. Clark posted a 128-50-22 record in 200 matches during three stops as a head coach including an 89-35-19 record at UW. Clark began his coaching career at Harvard where his teams went 26-10-1 in two seasons. He coached one year at Creighton, going 13-5-2 before moving to Seattle.
