Bwana's Hat Trick Powers Huskies To 4-3 Victory
September 17, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies took down the Santa Clara Broncos 4-3 Sunday thanks to Handwalla Bwana's hat trick. The hat trick was the first multi-goal game of Bwana's career and the first Husky hat trick since 2013, when Taylor Peay scored three against Santa Clara.
It was the second consecutive game the Huskies have scored four goals. The last time that occurred was 2014.
The Huskies improve to 5-2-0 with the win. Saif Kerawala made two saves in goal and improves his record to 5-2-0 as well.
Bwana had two shots in the first 13 minutes, creating a header opportunity as well with a cross. Bwana's two shots both came from high above the circle, with his first being punched over the crossbar by the goalie.
The sophomore's second shot came off a free kick at 13'. Bwana hit the crossbar, then the goalie's mitt with the shot, with the ball finally bouncing slowly away from goal.
Bwana's offensive pressure resulted in the first goal of the game a few minutes later, at 15'. Blake Bodily intercepted a long pass from Santa Clara's central defense. The freshman carried the ball into space, finally threading a through ball into the box to Bwana. Bwana managed to beat the goalie low while his defender grabbed his jersey, scoring on the advantage to make it 1-0.
Bodily was taken down in the box just a minute later for a penalty kick. Bwana took the PK. The sophomore tried a stutter step, only to be denied as the goalie guessed right and dove to stop the shot.
Santa Clara tied it on just its second shot of the goal, coming at 31'. A corner kick bounced around in the box, with the scramble ending with a goal to make it 1-1.
With just 30 seconds left in the half, Bodily put the Huskies back in the lead. Elijah Rice crossed the ball into the box from the right wing. Garret Jackson got his head on it but the shot was blocked back to the top of the box. Bodily found it there and fired immediately, making it through traffic for his second goal of the year.
Shots were 13-5 Washington through 45.
In the 53rd minute, Beau Blanchard headed the ball on goal, with the keeper barely brushing the ball over the bar for a corner.
Bwana's corner after Blanchard's shot curved in off the outstretched fingertips of the goalie to make it 3-1. That gave Bwana his first multi-goal game with two today, a total he would add to soon thereafter.
Bwana completed the hat trick off a set piece, scoring on a free kick from 28 yards. Bwana fired a shot straight over the wall and into the corner of the net with power to make it 4-1.
Santa Clara would score two goals in the final ten minutes of the game, cutting the final score to 4-3.
Total shots favored the Huskies heavily, with Washington taking 23 shots to Santa Clara's 13.
The Huskies take on Utah Valley on Thursday, September 21 at 7:00 pm PT in their next matchup. Tickets for that game are available online.
