Menzies Hat Trick Leads Washington Past Utah Valley, 4-0
September 21, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE – Scott Menzies came off the bench and made an immediate impact, scoring twice within one minute late in the first half and adding another in the second half to help lift Washington to a 4-0 win over Utah Valley University on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies move to 6-2-0 with their third-straight victory, scoring four goals in each match. The Wolverines drop to 3-4-0.
Menzies came off the bench in the 38th minute and quickly broke the ice with the first goal of the match two minutes later. Handwalla Bwana sent in a lob to Blake Bodily, who settled the ball and quickly sent a high cross into the box where Menzies headed it past the diving keeper from 15 yards out.
Just under a minute later, Menzies again found the back of the net, this time from close range. After a free kick from just outside of the box bounced off a number of players, Quentin Pearson pushed the loose ball toward the right side of the net where Menzies tapped it in. It was the second time in a week the Huskies recorded a pair of goals in under a minute.
Washington dominated play in the first half, holding a 13-0 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes.
In the second, the Huskies weathered a Utah Valley storm as the Wolverines had a few good chances. Washington added to the lead with Menzies' third goal of the match, heading in a cross from Bodily in the 76th minute.
Two minutes later the Huskies benefited from an own goal to cap the scoring.
Menzies recorded the second-straight hat trick for Washington, which saw Bwana tally three goals against Santa Clara on Sunday. Prior to that, the Huskies had not had a hat trick since the 2013 season when Taylor Peay scored three against Santa Clara.
"We think we have two starting number nine forwards," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "One has to start and one has to come off the bench. A lot of the times we think the guy off the bench will be the difference maker and Menzies was that guy today. I think we are playing such an up-tempo game right now and [a hat trick] is bound to happen. We simply talk about building margins and if we build enough margins we will win."
The Washington defense held Utah Valley to just five shots with none of them going on goal as Husky netminder Saif Kerawala earned his third shutout of the season.
"It was really nice to get the shutout and nice to be able to get the feet wet on a few defenders late," Clark said.
The victory avenged a loss at the hands of Utah Valley last season when the Wolverines knocked off Washington 2-1 in Orem, Utah.
The Huskies close out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Sunday, facing cross-town rival Seattle University at 6:00 pm at Championship Field.
