Huskies Inched Past By Bears 2-1 In OT
September 10, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies suffered their first home defeat of the season, falling 2-1 in overtime to the Mercer Bears. Elijah Rice scored the only goal for the Huskies, who fall to 3-2-0 on the season with the loss.
Saif Kerawala made five saves in goal for the Huskies but took the loss.
Washington started the game pressuring goal, with a cross from Rice just two minutes in that bandied about the box before Mercer could clear. The first corner of the game, at 10', also netted a dangerous chance for the Huskies. The cross off that corner was caught by the goalie just ahead of several on-rushing Husky attackers.
It was in the 18th minute that Rice put Washington on top. Jaret Townsend was fouled in the box, giving the Huskies a penalty kick. Rice calmly tucked that PK into the net to make it 1-0 on his third goal of the season.
Mercer would tie the game at 25'. Kerawala made the intitial save off a header but the Bears pounced on the rebound to make it 1-1.
Corban Anderson beat the goalie on a header off a Townsend cross in the 31st minute, coming close to giving Washington the lead once again. Anderson's header went just over the crossbar, unfortunately.
Shots after one period of play were 9-5 in Mercer's favor.
Handwalla Bwana came on in the second half and kept Washington's offense alive, recording four shots and serving several dangerous crosses. At 52', Bwana's corner kick found Garret Jackson in the box, only for Jackson's header to veer wide of goal. Bwana also let loose with two shots in the last five minutes of regulation from outside the box that couldn't quite find the net.
Shots were 15-14 Washington after regulation, with the Huskies outshooting Mercer 10-5 in the second 45'.
Mercer would score on the only shot of overtime to win the game, taking it 2-1.
