May 20, 2017 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – Kyle London and MJ Hubbs each had three hits for visiting Washington, but No. 9 Stanford got five hits and five RBIs from their top two hitters in the lineup to beat the Huskies, 7-5, Saturday at Sunken Diamond and clinch the series.
Washington (26-24, 12-14) scored the first two runs against Stanford (35-14, 17-9), but the Cardinal rallied with the next six runs and held off a late comeback attempt from the Huskies.
For a second consecutive night, UW jumped ahead, scoring twice in the second inning off Stanford starter and Seattle native Andrew Summerville. Willie MacIver led off the inning with a walk but had to wait until a two-out single by London to move up 90 feet. AJ Graffanino followed with a double down the left-field line that scored MacIver easily and London followed him home when Quinn Brodey misplayed the ball in left field.
Stanford tied things up and took the lead in the third inning with three runs off UW starter Jordan Jones. Nico Hoerner doubled home a pair of runs to tie things at 2-2 and he eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Duke Kinamon. Hoerner was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs for the Cardinal.
Jones would not make it out of the fourth as the last batter he faced Hoerner picked up his third RBI of the on a run-scoring single. The UW freshman lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out two and left trailing 4-2.
The Cardinal expanded their lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Matt Winaker. The Stanford first baseman went long for the second-consecutive game against the Huskies and upped his season total to seven homers on the season. Winaker went 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot and scored twice.
The blast proved to be big as the Huskies answered with two runs of their own in the seventh to bring the game back into reach, 6-4. Hubbs hammered a bases-clearing double after London and Graffanino reached on back-to-back base hits. Hubbs' hit came off Stanford reliever Will Matthiessen, but the runs were charged to Summerville, who finished the day giving up five hits, four runs – three earned – over six innings of work.
UW chipped further into Stanford's lead in the eighth, touching Stanford closer Colton Hock for a run. John Naff started things with a double and came around to score on a two-out single by London, his career-high equaling third hit of the game.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, Stanford manufactured a run in the eighth inning to increase its lead back to two runs. Jesse Kuet collected a RBI single up the middle that made the score 7-5.
That proved to be enough for Hock in the ninth. He allowed a single to Hubbs bringing the tying run to the plate. But, Hock got Jack Meggs to hit into a game-ending double play to pick up his 15th save of the season.
Summerville improved to 5-1 on the year, while Jones was dealt the loss, and moved his record to 4-8.
Joe DeMers will take the hill on Sunday for the Huskies and try to help the Huskies avoid the three game sweep. First pitch at Sunken Diamond is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
