May 21, 2017 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif.Β β Jesse Huet singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10thΒ inning as No. 9 Stanford beat Washington, 6-5, Sunday at Sunken Diamond Field to earn a series sweep.
Β
Pinch runner Christian Molfetta scored from third on Huet's single, sending the home team to a wild celebration in the infield.
In the final regular season home game for Cardinal Coach Mark Marquess, his team rallied from a 5-0 deficit to strengthen their bid to host a NCAA Regional. The Huskies (26-25, 12-15 Pac-12)Β will have some tough sledding ahead to make the tournament as their RPI was at 69Β entering the game.
Β
It was also Senior Day for the Cardinal (36-14, 18-9) and they got a strong performance on the hill from one of their six graduating players. Tyler Thorne (4-1) threw the final five innings of relief and shutout the HuskiesΒ on just two hits to pick up the win.
Β
Greg MinierΒ (1-2) took the loss after coming into the game in the ninth.
Β
Washington took a five run lead after three innings, but Stanford proved again why they're one of the best teams in the country.
Β
For the third time in the series, Washington took an early lead, this time giving starterΒ Joe DeMersΒ a 1-0 lead before he even stepped on the mound.Β Kyle LondonΒ led off the game with a single off Chris Castellanos and three batters later come in to score on a ground out by catcherΒ Joey Morgan. For Morgan it was his team-leading 38thRBI of the season.
Β
The Huskies played add on in the second scoring twice to increase the lead to 3-0.Β John NaffΒ andΒ Josh CushingΒ started the inning with singles and both would eventually score β Naff on a ground out byΒ Ben BairdΒ and Cushing on a two-out single by London.
Β
Washington made it 5-0 in the third with a two-out rally. WithΒ MorganΒ on second andΒ Willie MacIverΒ on first, Cushing singled to center field. He picked up one RBI on the play and a second run scored when center fielder Jack Klein's throw to third went into the Huskies' dugout.
Β
Stanford got two runs back in the fourth on a RBI double by designated hitter Daniel Bakst and run-scoring single from Duke Kinamon and would tie things up in the fifth on three runs.
Β
Matt Winaker drove home one run with a single and Bakst collected two more RBIs with a double to even the score, 5-5.
Β
The Cardinal threatened to break the tie and take the lead in their half of the seventh inning, but UW's defense came up huge to keep the game all square. With two runners on, Bakst singled to left field and Winaker tried to score on the play, butΒ AJ GraffaninoΒ took the relay throw from London in left field and fired to home where Morgan applied a sweeping tag. Morgan then ended the inning when he picked off Quinn Brodey at third base.
Β
DeMers also worked out of a jam in the eighth inning, including a strikeout to end the inning β his fourth of the game β and keep Stanford's go-ahead run standing at second. The sophomore from nearby Martinez, gave a gritty eight-inning, 121-pitch effort in 90 degree temperatures. He allowed 11 hits and five earned runs.
Β
