DeMers Slams Door Shut On ASU, Dawgs Win 4-0
May 14, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Sophomore Joe DeMers threw eight shutout innings and the UW offense jumped ahead early and held on for a 4-0 shutout win Sunday at Husky Ballpark to secure a series victory over visiting Arizona State.

DeMers threw a career high 129 pitches on a day in which his team needed him to go as long as he could. The Huskies (26-22, 12-12 Pac-12) needed the win to keep their post-season hopes trending in the right direction, and they got a timely effort from their starter.

"I thought they did a great job," Coach Lindsay Meggs said of his entire team. "I thought starting with Joe DeMers, when we had kind of a taxed and worn out bullpen, Joe gave us eight good innings and that made a huge difference."

Another huge difference was the offense giving the Husky starter a lead to work with. For the third time in the series, Washington scored early to go ahead of Arizona State (22-25, 8-16), this time with three runs in the second inning.

An error jump started the Huskies' offense as Willie MacIver reached when second baseman Carter Aldrete's throw pulled the first baseman Taylor Lane's foot off the base. Nick Kahle made the Sun Devils pay right way, doubling into the right-center gap, chasing MacIver home for a 1-0 UW lead.

The Huskies would go on to load the bases and AJ Graffanino was hit by a pitch from ASU starter Spencer Van Scoyoc (1-1) to force in the second run. Jack Meggs followed with a sacrifice fly off reliever Eder Erives that capped the scoring in the inning.

Joey Morgan and MacIver hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to expand the Huskies lead to 4-0. That proved to be enough run support for DeMers.

DeMers (6-3) got off to a rocky start, allowing the first two batters he faced to reach on singles, but he would go on to retire the side in order. All told, he set down 11-straight ASU hitters until the fourth inning.

DeMers would go on to strike out eight over his eight innings. He allowed nine hits and walked two batters.

DeMers faced several jams in the game, the tightest coming in the seventh inning. ASU loaded the bases, but DeMers induces Lyle Lin to bounce into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

He also allowed two runners to reach in the eighth, but got a harmless fly ball to end the threat.

Greg Minier pitched a perfect ninth to slam the door shut on the Sun Devils.

The Huskies head down to Palo Alto, Calif. for a big three game series next weekend starting on Friday.
