Big Inning Propels WSU Past UW, 6-3
April 22, 2017 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. Β βΒ Washington State scored five times in the fifth inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and hand the 30th-ranked Huskies a 6-3 loss Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Stadium in Pullman.
Β
The Cougars (18-18, 4-10 in Pac-12) have won the first two games to clinch the three-game series, while the Huskies (20-16, 7-7) have lost a season-high, four-straight games to fall to .500 in Pac-12 play.
Β
Washington catcher Joey Morgan picked up where he left off Friday night, doubling home a run in the first inning to give UW an early 1-0 lead. Coming off his first career multi-home run game in the series opener, Morgan drove home MJ Hubbs from first base on a hit off Cougars' starter Cody Anderson that found the gap in right-center.
Β
The Huskies couldn't play add-on offensively and the Cougars finally broke through in the fifth inning when they sent nine men to the plate.Β
Β
Husky starter Chris Micheles cruised through the first four innings, but after loading the bases he was lifted in favor of Jordan Jones. Jones was greeted by a game-tying, pinch-hit single from Blake Canton and that was followed by a bases-clearing triple by Danny Sinatro. Catcher Cal Waterman capped the inning with a ground out that scored Sinatro and made it 5-1.
Β
Sinatro added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning for the freshman's fourth RBI of the game and a 6-1 lead.
Β
UW cut into WSU's lead in the seventh with a pair of runs to make the score 6-3. Gage Matuszak doubled home Josh Cushing and eventually came around to score with two outs on a wild pitch.
Β
Reliever Brendan Ecklebarger gave the Huskies an opportunity to climb back in the game with 1 1/3 solid innings and the offense nearly responded in the ninth inning. But after Matuszak walked and Levi Jordan doubled to start the inning, Ryan Walker retired the next three batters to keep the Huskies off the board and earn his first save of the season.
Β
Anderson (4-2) went 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Cougars, while Micheles (1-3) was charged with the loss.
Β
Washington outhit WSU, 9-8, with Morgan, Willie MacIver and Jordan each picked up two hits.
Β
Hubbs singled in his second at bat to extend his career-high hit streak to 11 games. The senior has also now reached base safely in 29-straight games.
Β
The Huskies and Cougars wrap up the series Sunday at noon. The game will be carried on the Pac-12 Network.
