DeMers Pitches UW Past WSU, 7-1, In Series Finale
April 23, 2017 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. Β βΒ Joe DeMers struck out a career-high nine batters over eight innings and the offense scored four times in the sixth inning to break open a tight game as 30th-ranked Washington beat Washington State, 7-1, in Sunday's series finale at Bailey-Brayton Stadium in Pullman.
Β
DeMers faced four batters over the minimum to give the Huskies (21-16, 8-7) the lift they needed after the Cougars (18-19, 4-11) won the first two games in the series.
Β
The bats complimented the UW sophomore's efforts on the mound by pounding out 11 hits and coming through in the clutch. After struggling with runners in scoring position throughout the series, the Huskies converted their first couple of chances to take an early two-run lead.
Β
In the second inning, freshman Nick Kahle singled home Josh Cushing from second with two outs after the senior reached on a single and stole a base. An inning later, Joey Morgan singled home Levi Jordan for another two-out hit and a 2-0 UW advantage.
Β
The Huskies broke things open in the sixth inning as Cougar reliever Parker McFadden suddenly could not find the strike zone. Willie MacIver was hit by a pitch to start the inning and the next three Huskies were walked β the final one to Kahle β forcing in the first of four runs in the inning.
Β
AJ Graffanino drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly and the final two scored when Jack Meggs reached on an infield single. John Naff scored on the base hit and pinch-runner KJ Brady came home when Andres Alvarez's throw at shortstop got away from first baseman James Rutkin.
Β
Staked to a big lead, DeMers (4-3) was able to attack hitters and pound the strike zone. He retired 11-straight at one point and dodged trouble throughout the game until Dillon Plew touched him with a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was the first mistake of the game for DeMers, but he settled down after that, retiring the next eight batters to cap his stellar eight-innings of work.
Β
DeMers allowed just three hits, one walk and the Plew home run for the only run allowed.
Β
The Huskies added an insurance run in the seventh inning without hitting the ball out of the infield. Cushing reached on a bunt single and Hubbs, who walked earlier in the inning, scored from third on the play to make the score 7-1.
Β
Greg Minier got the final three outs in the ninth to snap the Huskies' season-high four-game losing streak.
Β
Four Huskies β Jordan, Morgan, Cushing and Naff β had multi-hit games and Hubbs was able to increase his streak of reaching base safely to 30-straight games and extend his career-high hit streak to 12 games.
Β
The Huskies return to action Tuesday and will play Seattle University at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue at 5:00 p.m.
