Huskies Shutout No. 21 Baylor, 6-0, To Clinch Series
April 01, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE Β βΒ Junior catcher Joey Morgan drove in three runs and a pair of freshmen pitchers teamed up to throw a shutout as the Huskies beat 21st-ranked Baylor, 6-0, Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
Β
The Huskies (16-9) have won the first two games of the series over the Bears (18-9) to clinch the three-game series. Washington will go for its second-consecutive home sweep Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Β
Washington led from start to finish as they sent eight men to the plate in the first inning and touched up Baylor starter Montana Parsons (2-2) for three runs. Kyle London and Jack Meggs started the rally with walks and after a sacrifice bunt by MJ Hubbs, Morgan gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead by beating out an infield single that scored London.
Β
Meggs came around to score on a Gage Matuszak RBI fielder's choice and Willie MacIver pushed Morgan across the plate for a 3-0 lead with a RBI single.
Β
The score remained 3-0 until the seventh when the Huskies were able to double their lead. Morgan doubled home a pair of runs and later came around to score when Bears' left fielder T.J. Raguse dropped a Matuszak fly ball.
Β
"We didn't have a lot of great at bats, but we had some timely at bats," is how Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs summed up the team's offensive day.
Β
Washington totaled nine hits on the day with MacIver picking up three (3-for-4) and both Morgan Β and AJ Graffanino picking up a pair of hits.
Β
The six runs proved to be enough for the Huskies as Chris Micheles and Jordan Jones teamed up to hold Baylor to three hits. No Baylor base runners reached third base and only two made it to second all day long.
Β
Micheles threw two scoreless innings to start the game and Jones (3-4) picked it up in the third inning, scattering three hits and walking one batter over the final seven innings to pick up his third win of the season.
Β
"That's about as clean of a game we have played this season," Meggs said. "We controlled the tempo and we threw strikes.
Β
"Chris did his job and Jordan did his job and that gave our bullpen a day off. It gives us a chance to gang up on them tomorrow and take it too them."
Sophomore right-hander Joe Demers (3-1, 2.63) is scheduled to take the hill for the Huskies on Sunday.
