UW Falls 6-3 In Series Finale Against Baylor
April 02, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Baylor hit three home runs as part of a 14-hit barrage Sunday at Husky Ballpark to beat Washington, 6-3, and salvage the final game of the three-game series.
Shea Langeliers hit two home runs for the 21st-ranked Bears (19-9) and Matt Menard added another to help their cause. The duo each had three hits and combined to drive in all six of Baylor's runs.
The teams exchanged first-inning, solo home runs by their No. 3 hitters to start the scoring. Baylor got theirs from Langeliers, while Washington (16-10) countered with a blast by right fielder MJ Hubbs.
Langeliers took an 0-2 pitch from UW starter Joe DeMers (3-2) over the left-field fence and into Baylor's bullpen, while Hubbs took a 2-2 pitch from eventual winning pitcher Cody Bradford (4-2) the other way and over the 365-foot marker in right field. For Hubbs, it was his second home run of the year and extended a streak of reaching base safety to 19-straight games.
Baylor's freshman catcher Langeliers got back into the action in the third inning taking a 1-1 pitch from DeMers the opposite way and over the right-field wall for a three-run homer. It was his fifth of the year and gave the Bears what turned out to be and insurmountable 4-1 advantage.
UW answered back in its half of the third inning, scoring twice on a two-out, two-run single by catcher Joey Morgan that moved his RBI total to a team-high 20. It cut the lead to 4-3, but Baylor responded again next time up to bat.
DeMers got the first two outs of the inning easily in the fourth, but after an infield single, an error and a walk extended the inning, he gave up a RBI single to Menard that made the score 5-3. With the bases loaded and Langeliers due up, Leo Nierenberg was called from the bullpen and he got a ground out to end the threat.
DeMers was limited to a season-low 3 1/3 innings on the hill, giving up eight hits, five runs – four earned. He walked one and struck out three and was saddled with his first loss since his opening start
The Bears extended its advantage back to three runs in the seventh on Menard's solo home run off Nierenberg. The 6-3 advantage proved to be enough as all that the Huskies could muster over the final three innings were a couple of hits.
Troy Montemayor came into the game in the ninth and allowed a lead-off double to AJ Graffanino, but got a trio of pop ups to end the game and pick up his seventh save of the season.
Offensively, eight of nine Husky starters had hits, with Jack Meggs (2-for-5) accounting for the only multi-hit game of the day.
The Huskies play the first of three mid-week games during the season against cross-town rival Seattle University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. with the action carried live on the Pac-12 Network.
