Huskies Walk Off With Wild 5-4 Win Over Baylor
March 31, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Kyle London hit a walk-off RBI single to cap a two-run, ninth-inning rally as the Huskies (15-9) beat No. 21 Baylor, 5-4, in stunning fashion Friday night at Husky Ballpark. It was the third time this season that the Huskies have won in their last at bat.
Baylor (18-8) scored three times in the ninth to erase a 3-1 deficit and take a 4-3 lead, but Washington scored twice after two outs to turn the tables in the opener of a three-game series.
With two outs and pinch runner Jacob Hirsh at second base, Levi Jordan muscled a single into right field off of Baylor closer Troy Montemayor (1-1) to tie the game 4-4.
AJ Graffanino kept things going when he hit a grounder to shortstop Cole Weaver that should have been a force out at second for the third out, but Weaver threw the ball over the second baseman's head and into right field, allowing Jordan to scamper down to third.
London capped the improbable comeback by singling up the middle on an 0-1 pitch allowing Jordan to score the winning run and setting off a wild celebration on the infield.
"I don't think anyone panicked," London said about losing the lead in the top half of the ninth.
"I was just trying to put a good swing on a pitch – it was a changeup down – I wanted to hit something hard through the infield and that's what happened. It's always fun to win the exciting ones…it proves to the team that we can win in any kind of way."
The Huskies were one strike away from beating Baylor in the ninth inning, but pinch hitter Cameron Miller hit a two-strike, two-run homer off Alex Hardy to cap a three-run ninth and send the visitors to a stunning 4-3 lead.
The Huskies led 3-1 heading to the final inning, thanks to a seventh-inning home run by Gage Matuszak that broke a 1-1 tie and a MJ Hubbs sacrifice fly in the eighth that gave the Huskies a two-run cushion, but Baylor was able to get to Husky starter Noah Bremer in the ninth inning to chase him two-outs short of a complete game before taking the lead.
Kameron Esthay doubled to start the ninth and came around to score on a one-out single by Davis Wendzel. After Greg Minier got a foul out for the second out, Hardy came in and allowed the tying run and go-ahead run to score on Miller's homer.
Bremer was engaged in a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel with Baylor's Nick Lewis when Matuszak interrupted the groove with a lead-off shot in the seventh for his second home run of the season. The senior deposited a 3-2 pitch from Lewis the opposite way and into Baylor's bullpen to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Hubbs hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to give the Huskies a two-run cushion, but it didn't prove to be enough this time.
John Naff gave the Huskies the early 1-0 lead in the second with a RBI triple. Joey Morgan and Matuszak walked to start the inning, but after a double-play the Huskies were in search of some two-out mojo, which Naff delivered on a 1-2 pitch from Lewis.
The lead was short-lived for the Huskies as Baylor tied the game in the top of the third. Lead-off hitter T.J. Ragusse started the inning with his second single of the night off Bremer, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a grounder hit by Shea Langeliers. That was Baylor's only run until the fateful ninth inning.
UW freshman Brendan Ecklebarger (2-0) recorded the final out of the ninth to pick up the win for the Huskies.
Washington had eight hits on the night with London (2-for-5) recording the only multi-hit game.
The Huskies and Bears resume the series Saturday with game two scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.
