Huskies Go Separate Ways To Stanford And Texas
March 30, 2017 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – The outdoor track season kicks into high gear this week and Washington will have a major presence at the two premiere events, as one group of Dawgs heads to the Stanford Invitational and another is off to the Texas Relays.
With Texas legend Eric Metcalf leading the sprints group this year, the Huskies are taking their sprinters to the Texas Relays for the first time in years. Joining the sprinters in Texas will be UW's pole vault crew, looking to ride some of the big tailwinds that always seem to come out of Austin this time of the season. The Stanford Invite is one of the elite distance running meets on the outdoor calendar, and thus there will be a lot of Dawgs on the line in those races. The Husky throwers and remaining jumps squad will also be headed to Stanford.
At the Texas Relays, a few Huskies will get going on Thursday, including Darhian Mills in the 400-meter hurdles, and Lev Marcus, Zach Shugart, and Blaise Black in the B and C pole vault sections.
Friday, the baton will take center stage, as the Huskies will run 4x400m relays on both the men's and women's sides, and the women will compete in the sprint medley relay, a 200-200-400-800m event that is scheduled to include Kennadi Bouyer, Imani Apostol, Laura Anuakpado, and Hannah Derby in that order.
The women's 4x4 will feature Apostol, Mills, Derby, and Anuakpado, and the men's 4x4 will have Andrew Brown, Ryan Croson, Michael Thomas, and Jacopo Spanò. Washington will also run a pair of 4x100m relays with Khalil Winfrey, Spanò, Jordan Lucas, and Lucas Strong for the men, and Sarah Satvig, Apostol, Anuakpado, and Bouyer for the women.
On the infield, Chase Smith, Elizabeth Quick, Kristina Owsinski, Annika Dayton, Tori Franzen, and Kaitlin Zinsli will all be vaulting on Friday or Saturday, Casey Burns will compete in the triple jump, and Mayson Douglass is entered in the high jump. Eric Simpson and Mills will also run the 110m and 100m hurdles in Texas.
Action at Stanford will start on Friday with the lion's share of the distance running events taking place well into the night at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Friday will have the biggest crew of Husky distance runners in action since the fall. Amy-Eloise Neale is entered in the top heat of the women's 5,000-meters, which will be her first collegiate 5k and first run outdoors after taking ninth in the NCAA mile final indoors. Section two will have Izzi Batt-Doyle, Katie Knight, and Charlotte Prouse all on the track. Batt-Doyle and Knight just ran a 1,500m tune-up last weekend in West Seattle, while Prouse will be racing for the first time in 2017 indoors or out. Also in the third section will be freshman Kaitlyn Neal and sophomore Emily Hamlin, while Josephine Bosserman runs in section four of the 5k.
Kaylee Flanagan will be the last Husky in action late Friday night as she runs the 10k. Grace Hodge will be the only woman running the 1,500-meters on Friday.
Senior Blake Nelson will lead the men's mid-distance group on Friday as the 2016 NCAA semifinalist opens up at 1,500-meters. Mahmoud Moussa will also look for a 1,500m PR. In the 5,000-meters, Andrew Gardner goes in heat three, while Charlie Barringer and Julius Diehr are in section four.
Three Huskies, Jonathon Cantle, Mason Fletcher, and Connor Morello, are slated to run the 800-meters on Saturday.
In the throws, freshman Jose Padilla will go in both the shot and discus, while Dan Boyden focuses on the discus, and Carey Campbell and Kyle White toss the hammer. For the women, Onyie Chibuogwu will be in both the hammer and discus, freshman Angel Nkwonta will go in the hammer and the shot put, and Emmy Engle, Daisey Newman, and Katherine Taylor will all throw the javelin.
Sprinters heading to Stanford include Carolyn Birkenfeld and Whitney Diggs in the women's 400-meters, and Jason Palmer in the men's 400-meters.
Cole Jensen, Josh Gordon, and Carly Lester will all compete in a number of events at Stanford as they continue to put the pieces together for their first outdoor multis.
