Neale Wins Stanford Invite 5k Over Elite Field
March 31, 2017 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES – Amy-Eloise Neale is the reigning Pac-12 cross country champion, a race that covers 6,000-meters, so stepping up for her first 5,000-meter run on the track certainly wasn't that big of a stretch. But despite her credentials nobody quite expected Neale to outkick the NCAA cross country and indoor 5k champion to win her 5k debut at the Stanford Invitational tonight. Neale did just that in her first race since the indoor NCAA mile final, highlighting a packed day of track for UW at both Stanford and the Texas Relays.
Stanford Invitation Recap
Over the homestretch on the final lap, Neale tracked down Missouri's Karissa Schweizer, who most recently finished first in the 5k and second in the 3k at the NCAA Indoor Championships just three weeks ago, winning by a couple strides in a time of 15:39.30. That time puts Neale at No. 2 in the NCAA this season in the 5,000-meters, and also puts her at No. 3 all-time at Washington.
Speaking live on Flotrack.org right after her win, Neale said she had been open for any kind of pace and that it "helped to be a little bit naïve" for her first 5k on the track.
"I knew everyone around me was really good so I just tried to relax and hang on for the first two miles, and then I felt pretty good, so I made a move to ... get out of the mess there. I felt good and just tried to use my instincts," Neale said.
Three more Huskies had impressive 5k runs in earlier heats. Sophomore Emily Hamlin ran 16:15.94 for a PR of over 20 seconds, and freshman Kaitlyn Neal crossed in 16:16.19 while junior Izzi Batt-Doyle ran 16:16.36. On the men's side, Andrew Gardner clocked a 14:18.55 time in his 5k and redshirt freshman Charlie Barringer ran a 14:23.30.
Closing out the night for the distance crew was senior Kaylee Flanagan, going the full 25 laps of the 10k once again. She came through in a strong time of 33:52.48, only nine seconds off her personal-best.
At 1,500-meters, senior Blake Nelson opened his outdoor season with a 3:50.64 time while Mahmoud Moussa was fourth in his heat in 3:53.30, just a second off his PR.
Multi athletes Josh Gordon had a PR of 14.93 seconds in the 110m hurdles and a long jump of 23-5 ½ while Cole Jensen had a clearance of 6-7 in the high jump. Carly Lester ran both hurdles races, going 15.02 in the 100m hurdles and 1:01.78 in the 400m hurdles. In the women's long jump, Kate Adler had a best of 18-2 ¼.
In the throws, freshman Angel Nkwonta won her shot put section with a toss of 44-6 on her sixth and final attempt. Fellow freshman Emmy Engle also had a season-best toss of 142-5 to take seventh in the invite section, also on her final throw. In the discus, Dan Boyden was fifth with a mark of 160-0 and Jose Padilla had a first attempt of 157-8. Junior Onyie Chibuogwu had a bit of a tough day in the hammer, fouling twice before a 165-3 throw on her final attempt.
A few quarter milers made the trip to Stanford, with Whitney Diggs posting a season-best 400-meter run of 56.38 seconds and freshman Jason Palmer runnig a 49.35.
Texas Relays Recap
On the second day of action at the Texas Relays in Austin, junior Casey Burns came right out of the gate today with a career-best in the triple jump, winning his section in the process. His very first attempt he went 51-10 ½, a PR by two inches and improving on his No. 2 mark in school history. He also hit the sand at 51-6 ½ on his sixth and final attempt to complete a great day.
On the track, senior Kennadi Bouyer advanced into the finals of the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.49 seconds, slightly wind-aided. It was rare to find a wind-legal mark today at Mike A. Myers stadium. Sarah Stavig also had a quick time of 11.72 seconds with a 2.4 tailwind.
The men's sprinters also rolled to some speedy times with the wind at their backs. Freshman Khalil Winfrey was 15th out of the 100 men's entries, going 10.43, with a hefty 4.8 tailwind. Senior Lucas Strong went 10.52 and Jordan Lucas ran 10.61 seconds, both wind-aided.
The 4x100m relays opened things up on the track. The men's group of Winfrey, Jacopo Spanò, Lucas and Strong ran 41.09 seconds, while the women's group of Stavig, Apostol, Anuakpado, and Bouyer ran 46.02.
The women's 4x4 of Imani Apostol, Darhian Mills, Hannah Derby, and Laura Anuakpado ran 3:45.22. Later in the day the Dawgs came back and ran a sprint medley relay, with Kennadi Bouyer and Apostol running 200m legs, then Anuakpado at 400m, and Derby at 800-meters, with the group finishing in 4:04.67.
Mills also ran the 100m hurdles earlier in the day, going 14.25 seconds and on the men's side, junior Eric Simpson ran 14.61 in the 110m hurdles.
