DeMers Shuts Out Indiana State, 8-0, In Game One Of DH
March 11, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE Β βΒ Joe DeMers threw his first career complete-game shutout and Jack Meggs collected a career-best four hits as No. 12 Washington (7-5) beat Indiana State, 8-0, in game one of a double header Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
Β
With runners on the corners and two outs in the ninth, Ben Baird made a diving stab at third and threw out Chris Ayers at first to keep the Sycamores (6-8) off the score board and preserve the shutout. DeMers (2-1) ended up throwing 115 pitches, allowing five hits, walking just one batter and striking out six.
Β
As good as DeMers was on the hill, the offense held up its end of the bargain. The Huskies pounded out 10 hits and came through in the clutch throughout the game. Meggs led the attack going 4-for-5 with his first home run of the season and three runs scored.
Β
UW wasted little time getting the offense rolling, scoring twice in the bottom of the first to grab a 2-0 lead. Indiana State starter Jeremy McKinney (3-1) walked AJ Graffanino to start the inning and Meggs followed with a sharp single. The pair remained where they were until first baseman John Naff stepped up to the plate and drove a ball to deep right-center field that reached the wall for a two-out, two-run triple.
Β
Meggs kept the offense going and made the score 3-0 in the third inning with a lead-off home run to right field. Despite a strong wind blowing in from the south, Meggs took the first pitch he saw from McKinney and ripped it over the fence for his fourth career home run.
Β
Washington tacked two unearned runs in the fifth inning to expand its lead to 5-0. The Sycamores committed two errors in the inning, both proving costly. With MJ Hubbs on second via a walk and Joey Morgan at first due to a fielding error, Willie MacIver stepped up with two outs and singled sharply into left field. Hubbs raced home on the play and Morgan was able to score when the throw from the left fielder went to the backstop.
Β
The Huskies kept pouring it on in the sixth, scoring three times to take an 8-0 lead. KJ Brady scored all the way from first on a Graffanino single and fielding error by the left fielder and MJ Hubbs drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single.
Β
The two teams will play a second game at 7:30 tonight.
