UW Rally Falls Short In Series Opener Against Indiana St.
March 10, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – No. 12-ranked Washington (7-5) had the tying run on base in the ninth inning, but Indiana State's Austin Conway slammed the door shut and the Sycamores (6-7) held on for a 4-2 win at Husky Ballpark on Friday night to win game one of a four-game series.
Indiana State scored in the fourth inning to take a lead they would never relinquish, but the Huskies tried to chip away throughout the game. Ultimately, they came up short as they stranded 11 runners on base throughout the game.
UW starter Noah Bremer struggled out of the gate in the first inning, throwing 23 pitches, but he was able to escape a first and third situation with no outs unscathed and picked up the pace from there. He walked the game's first hitter, Dominic Bifano, and allowed a single to No. 2 hitter Clay Dungan, but he struck out red-hot hitting Tony Rosselli and then got a strike 'em out, throw 'em out, inning-ending double play to keep the game scoreless.
He would go on to strike out the next four batters for a streak of six-straight before hitting a road bump in the fourth inning. Indiana State loaded the bases to start the frame on three-straight hits and Bremer buckled down by getting a 4-6-3 double play. On the play a run scored, but that would be it for the Sycamores as Bremer got a routine fly out to end the inning.
Indiana State scored an unearned run in the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Kyle Moore smacked a two-out double off the wall in right field to plate Rosselli, who reached earlier in the inning on a fielding error.
Bremer's counterpart, Ryan Keaffaber (1-1), was solid all night for the Sycamores on the hill. He struck out five in six innings of work and did not allow the lead-off hitter to reach until the top of the seventh on a Nick Kahle single.
Damon Olds came in to relieve Keaffaber and gave up a one out triple to AJ Graffanino that scored Levi Jordan, who reached on a fielder's choice. But the Huskies were unable to capitalize and tie the game. Sycamores' first baseman Jeff Zahn made a diving stop for the second out and Olds struck out MJ Hubbs to end the inning.
Bremer (1-2) turned over the game to the bullpen after seven solid innings. He struck out seven, walked two and allowed just one earned run.
The Sycamores struck for two more runs in the eight to extend their lead to 4-1. Chris Ayers had a RBI single and Zahn hit a sacrifice fly to score the runs.
The Huskies had a good chance to cut into the Sycamores' lead in the eighth, but with the bases loaded and one out, Kahle hit into an inning ending double play.
UW tried to mount a last-ditch, two-out rally in the ninth inning, but came up just short. After a pair of walks and wild pitch put two runners in scoring position, Joey Morgan reached on an infield single. His hit cut the score to 4-2 and put the tying run on first, but Conway was able to strikeout pinch hitter Gage Matuszak to end the game.
The two teams are scheduled to play a double header Saturday at Husky Ballpark with first pitch of game one at 2:00 p.m.
