Kelsey Plum Named Pac-12 Player Of The Year
February 28, 2017 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE -- The Pac-12 women's basketball coaches have voted University of Washington senior Kelsey Plum the Pac-12 Player of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday (Feb. 28). The guard is the second player in program history to earn the honor, joining Giuliana Mendiola in 2003.
Plum was joined by fellow senior Chantel Osahor on the All-Pac-12 First Team. Plum's All-Pac-12 honor is the fourth of her collegiate career, as she joins Jazmine Davis as the only Husky to make All-Pac-12 all four years. Osahor, who was also named All-Pac-12 Defensive Honorable Mention, is making her first appearance after receiving honorable mention last season.
After an outstanding rookie debut, freshman Aarion McDonald was tabbed to the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team.
Plum has been one of the top offensive threats in the conference throughout her illustrious four-year career but her senior season has been especially spectacular. In the final regular season game of her career, the 5-8 guard poured in a Pac-12 record 57 points to pass Jackie Stiles and become the all-time leading scorer in women's college basketball history with 3,397 career points.
Plum leads the nation in scoring at 31.6 points per game and is doing it at an efficient rate, shooting 53.7 from the field, 43.6 from three-point range and 88.7 from the foul line. She has a chance to finish her senior season as the only player, male or female, in the history of the NCAA to complete a season as the game's leading scorer and a member of the 50-40-90 club.
Just 11 games into her senior season, she broke the all-time Pac-12 scoring record and she later became the first player in conference history, male or female, to surpass 3,000 career points. She is just the 12th player in NCAA history to score 3,000 points. On Saturday, Plum also broke the Pac-12 record for most points scored in a season.
Earlier this season, she became Washington's all-time career three-point leader and she became just the second player in Pac-12 history to eclipse 300 in her career.
A national player of the year candidate, she is on the watch lists for the Wade Trophy, Naismith Award and John Wooden Award while being named the national player of the week twice.
Osahor, the nation's leading rebounder, earned her first career All-Pac-12 honor after a stellar senior season. The Phoenix, Ariz. native tops the NCAA with 26 double-doubles. She has accounted for seven 20-plus rebound games including a Pac-12 single-game record of 30 in a game against Washington State.
In conference play this season, Osahor is averaging 17 points, which is fifth-best, while her 15.4 rebounds per game is the most in league action. On the season, she is the team's second leading scorer, averaging 15.9 points per contest and the forward's 4.1 assists per game is also second-best.
McDonald becomes the 15th Husky selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. In league play, the speedy freshman is averaging 8.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. McDonald has become a staple in the Husky starting lineup and she is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.3 points per game.
A two-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honoree, McDonald has scored in double-figures nine times this season, including a career-high 23 against CSUN.
Washington is the No. 3 seed heading into this week's Pac-12 Tournament, its highest seeding since 2003. The Huskies will face the winner of Oregon and Arizona Friday (March 3) at 8:30 p.m. at Key Arena in Seattle.
