Huskies Rally In Ninth For Season-Opening Win
February 18, 2017 | Baseball
SANTA CLARA, Calif. ย โย Washington scored once in the eighth and exploded for four runs in the ninth inning to flip a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 win over Santa Clara as the 12th-ranked Huskies escaped with an improbable season-opening win in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at Stephen Schott Stadium.
ย
The Huskies entered the final frame trailing 2-1 and had only four hits, but they woke up just in time to rally past upset-minded Santa Clara. They strung together four hits in the ninth โ including three doubles.
ย
Junior right-fielderย KJ Bradyย came up with the first big hit, bouncing a one-out, bases loaded double off Bryson Spagnuolo (0-1) into right field that gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead. Catcherย Joey Morganย followed with a two-run double of his own off the left-field wall to make it 5-2.
ย
Alex Hardyย (1-0) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Huskies. He was the last of four pitchers that combined to hold Santa Clara in check.
ย
Starterย Noah Bremerย stuck out a career-high 10 Santa Clara batters, but left the game trailing 2-0 The junior was outstanding for the Huskies, but Santa Clara senior right-hander Jacob Steffens was equally strong for the Broncos. Bremer threw six solid innings, gave up two runs โ only one earned โ on just three hits and allowed three walks. He struck out exactly two hitters in each of his final five innings, but his pitch count was at 116 after six complete, forcing the Huskies to go to their bullpen.
ย
Santa Clara struck first in the second inning on a lead-off home run by catcher Jake MacNichols. The freshman took a 2-0 pitch from Bremer over the left-field fence to collect a homer in his first collegiate at bat and give the Broncos a quick 1-0 lead.
ย
The Broncos added an unearned run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Niko Holm walked with one out and moved to second when Bremer's pick-off attempt went wide of first base. Holm moved to third on a two-out infield single, which proved huge as he came around to score when Bremer unleashed a wild pitch into the dirt.
ย
Steffens rolled through the Huskies' lineup allowing just three hits in seven innings of work. He allowed three hits, walked four batters and struck out seven in his 2017 debut, but ultimately did not figure in the decision.
ย
The Huskies finally got to Santa Clara in the eighth after Steffens exited the game. Brady walked to start the inning and eventually came around to score on a 2-out single by third basemanย Willie MacIver.
ย
The Huskies ended up outhitting the Broncos, 8-5. MacIver,ย Josh Cushingย andย AJ Graffaninoย collected a pair of hits each.
ย
Game 2 of the doubleheader is scheduled for 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
