UW Drops Game Two, 4-3, To Split Doubleheader
February 18, 2017 | Baseball
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Joe DeMers threw a career high seven innings and struck out seven batters, but Santa Clara salvaged a double-header split winning game two, 4-3, Saturday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.
The 12th-ranked Huskies (1-1) scored four times in the ninth inning to rally for a 5-2 win in game one, but there was no late-inning magic for the them in game two.
Santa Clara (1-1) struck first in game two with a run in the second off DeMers (0-1). John Cresto singled to centerfield with two outs in the inning to send Jake Brodt home from second. It was part of a 3-for-3 night in game two for Santa Clara's sophomore third baseman.
Freshman Christian Jones wiped the Broncos 1-0 lead away in the fourth with one swing of the back when he took the first pitch he saw from starter Eric Lex the opposite way for a two-run homer.
Jones, the 2016 Gatorade Washington State Player of the Year, arrived on campus with a reputation for power, and he lived up to the expectations in just his second collegiate at bat. His two-out shot over the left-field wall scored Jack Meggs from second, who reached on a walk and stole second base.
It was UW's only lead of game two, and it was short-lived. Santa Clara re-took the lead in the fifth thanks again to Cresto. The third baseman tripled home right fielder Grant Meylan, who led off the inning with a single, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Austin Reyes.
Cresto got into the scoring action again in the seventh, this time delivering a solo home run to left-center field. He took a 1-0 pitch from DeMers into the night sky that gave the Broncos a 4-2 lead.
It was the last inning of a solid 2017 debut for DeMers. The sophomore right-hander from nearby Pleasant Hill, Calif., lasted a career-high seven innings, struck out seven – one off his career high – and allowed eight hits, four runs. He did not walk a batter.
The Huskies tried to rally again and scored once in the eighth, but they ultimately left the tying run on second base with no outs. John Naff led off the inning with a single and Willie MacIver followed with an infield single. Both runners advanced into scoring position when second baseman Evan Haberle threw the ball into the first base dugout.
But, freshman Brandon Buckley escaped with minimal damage anchoring a pair of strikeouts around a RBI groundout by designated hitter Josh Cushing.
Buckley would go on to strike out the side in the ninth to preserve the one-run lead and pick up a four-inning save in his college debut. He stuck out eight Huskies.
Lex (1-0) struck out nine Huskies over five innings to pick up the win.
The two teams will try to play game three of the series on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. The Bay Area is expecting poor weather on Sunday and Monday, so stay tuned for updates.
