Washington (33-21, 17-13 Pac-12) opens the 2017 season on the road with eight games in the Bay Area of California. First up is a four-game series at Santa Clara (Feb. 17-20). The Huskies will remain in California and travel to Moraga and face St. Mary's for four game (Feb. 23-26) afterwards.
The Huskies are coming off a second-place finish in the Pac-12 Conference and their 10th trip to the NCAA Regionals, where they were 1-2 in Nashville, Tenn. UW was picked fourth in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll and are ranked in four of five of the major national polls, including a high of 12th in Baseball America's rankings.
The Huskies will have four non-conference series over the next four weeks before starting Pac-12 play, and Coach Lindsay Meggs is confident that the non-conference schedule will help prepare his team for the rigors of what will be a very challenging year.
"Knock on wood, if we get good weather, I'm excited about the way our schedule lays out," said Meggs, who is entering his eighth season as the Huskies' head man. "Our mindset is in those first four weeks to get as many guys on the field as possible in as many different combinations so we can see how guys handle leading off an inning, coming out of the bullpen, closing and coming off the bench to play defense. By the time we roll in the Pac-12Β play we want to have a good feel about us against righties and lefties. We're ready to get our guys going and hit the ground running."
SERIES HISTORY VS. SANTA CLARA:
The Huskies lead all-time 14-8 and have won 9 for the last 10 games in the series. The first game between the two squads was 105 years ago in 1912 when the Huskies won 3-1. The last time the teams met was in California was Β 2014 when the Huskies beat the Broncos twice on the road.
