Moser's Career Night Paces Huskies to 81-69 Win at Idaho
December 01, 2017 | Women's Basketball
MOSCOW, IDAHO --- Jenna Moser put up a career-high 21 points with freshman Kierra Collier also posting a career-best with 18 points as Washington picked up its first road win of the year in an 81-69 victory at the University of Idaho on Friday night.
The Huskies move back to .500 with a 3-3 overall record, wrapping up a four-game road trip with a 2-2 record. The Vandals fall to 2-4 on the season.
Moser put together an impressive performance in front of a big group of fans who made the 30 minute drive north from her hometown of Colton, Washington. The senior went 6-of-7 from the field including a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range. She also converted on all five of her free throw attempts.
"Everybody is just so proud of Jenna tonight," said head coach Jody Wynn. "She not only performed beautifully offensively tonight, but defended 94 feet, guarded their best players and just did a great job of being our floor general. In the second half they went to a diamond and one to try to isolate her out of our offense and she did a nice job screening and doing the other small things. She has a motor to her and just won't quit. I'm just so happy to have her come home and to perform the way she did."
Collier came on strong in the second half, scoring 12 of her 18 points in the second half, going 7-of-14 from the field and adding three steals, three rebounds and an assist.
Sophomore Mai-Loni Henson added 12 points for the Huskies with Hannah Johnson scoring 11 points including nine in the second half.
The game was a tale of two halves for the Huskies who 61.3 percent from the field in the second half after hitting just 33 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes. Washington survived a three-point barrage by the Vandals who hit 10 three-pointers including six in the first half.
Washington seemed in control early on after responding to a game-opening three-pointer with an 8-0 run to go up early. The defense was the key for the Huskies early on as UW forced three turnovers and turned them into six early points over that run. Idaho battled back and quickly tied the game back up at eight on a three-pointer at the 5:15 mark. The Huskies answered back, outscoring the Vandals 8-3 the rest of the way to lead 16-11 at the break.
After a quiet start to the second quarter, the Vandals struck first with back-to-back threes to go up 17-16 with 6:57 to go. The two teams traded points until Moser drained a deep three-pointer for the Huskies first triple of the game. But she was just getting started, hitting another two threes down the stretch to help Washington outscore Idaho 11-3 over the final 3:30 of the half and went to the locker room holding a 31-27 lead.
Washington came out firing in the second half, hitting its first five shots from the field including another three-pointer by Moser to take a 43-32 lead three minutes in. Idaho scored six quick points and narrowed the UW lead to six at 44-38 two minutes later. But Washington answered with a 6-0 run of its own to stretch the lead back to 12 and held a 59-47 advantage at the end of three.
The Huskies took control of the game early in the fourth quarter, using a 12-4 run over the first 3:30 of the fourth to take its largest lead of the game at 71-54. Idaho was not able to get any closer than 12 the rest of the way as the Huskies cruised to the win.
Idaho received a game-high 26 points from Mikayla Ferenz with Taylor Pierce adding 16 points. The rest of the team combined for just 27 points.
Washington dominated inside, outscoring the Vandals 42-26 in the paint and out-rebounding Idaho 36-29. The Huskies also forced 20 turnovers, turning them into 28 points with 12 fastbreak points.
Washington returns to action on Sunday, hosting Portland at 1:30 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena.
