LAS VEGAS --- Washington's trip to Vegas ended on a rough note as the Huskies lost 92-68 to No. 2 Texas in their final game at the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout on Saturday afternoon at the South Point Arena.
Washington finishes its trip with a 1-1 record and sits at 2-3 on the season. The Longhorns remain perfect at 5-0.
Amber Melgoza led the Huskies with 12 points while Alexis Griggsby scored 10 and added five assists and two steals off the bench. Mackenzie Wieburg and Hannah Johnson each contributed nine.
The Huskies kept the game close in the first quarter as UW's defense held the high-powered Texas offense to just 20 points. However the Huskies were only able to muster nine.
Texas scored the first five points of the game but the Huskies got on the board thanks to an easy layup from Collier. Later in the quarter, Mai-Loni hit a three to pull UW within one at 10-9 with 4:09 left. But that would be it for the Huskies for a while as Texas went on a long 20-0 run over the next nine minutes, extending the lead to 30-9.
Washington rallied after the media timeout, going on a quick 9-0 run over the next four minutes--with Johnson scoring six of those--to cut the Texas lead to 35-21. But Texas scored the final six points of the quarter and held a 41-21 lead at the break.
The Huskies came out fighting in the third quarter as the three's started falling. Texas extended the lead to 50-25 within the first three minutes, but Griggsby hit back-to-back three-pointers to get Washington going. After a Texas bucket, Mackenzie Wieburg drained a long three and was fouled, converting the free throw to make it a 52-35 game at the 5:36 mark.
Texas answered back again, and closed out the quarter on a 16-4 run after the four-point play and led 68-39 heading to the fourth.
Washington won the fourth quarter 29-24 but could not close the gap any more.
The Huskies return to the court on Friday, traveling to face the University of Idaho on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
