November 02, 2017 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Noah Dickerson scored 21 points and added 10 boards while Jaylen Nowell hit a clutch runner in the lane to lift Washington to a 91-87 win over Saint Martin's University in an exhibition game on Thursday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies had to fight off an incredible shooting night from the Saints, who connected on 18 three-pointers on the night. Overall, Saint Martin's hit 52.9 percent from beyond the arc, making 10 more buckets from three-point range (18) than two-point range (10).
Washington struggled from the field early on, shooting just 36 percent in the first half before connecting on 58 percent of its shots in the second. Down the stretch the Huskies were clutch, going 8-for-8 from the field and making 7-of-9 from the free throw line over the final eight minutes of the game.
The Saints had little answer for Dickerson's size and presence inside, shooting 13-of-17 from the free throw line and scoring 15 of his team-high 21 points in the second half. David Crisp added 18 points and four assists for the Huskies while Matisse Thybulle had 14 points, three steals and three blocks.
Dominic Green opened the night with a three for Washington, but the Saints responded by hitting four-straight three-pointers to open up an 18-7 lead 14:22 into the contest. Trailing 27-21 after a free throw with 8:26 to go in the first, the Huskies slowly chipped away and used a long 18-6 run capped by a fast-break three from Crisp to go up 39-33 with 2:34 to go. Green would book-end the half with a three-pointer with six seconds left to give Washington a 46-40 lead at the break.
Thybulle kept the momentum going to start the second, draining a long three to give the Huskies their largest lead of the night at 49-40 just 39 seconds into the second. But the Saint kept the three-point barrage going and used a 22-7 run over the next eight minutes to take a 62-56 lead with 12:38 to play.
Three minutes later, Saint Martin's would extend the lead to nine on a deep three with 9:17 to go, giving the visitors a 73-64 advantage. Washington slowly chipped away and eventually tied the game at 77-77 with 5:29 remaining.
The teams traded baskets over the next minute-and-a-half before Dickerson hit a tough jumper in the paint and Carlos Johnson added a runner in the lane to put the Huskies up 86-82 with 2:54 on the clock.
The Saints would cut the lead back to one and were within two point after a free throw with :39.9 second left made it an 89-87 game. But Nowell made a tough runner in the paint as the shot clock wound down to put the Huskies back up by four with 11 seconds left, then came up with a steal on the other end with five seconds to go to seal the victory.
Washington's size inside helped the home team keep pace on the offensive end as the Huskies netted 34 points in the paint and 14 points of 13 SMU turnovers. Overall, the Huskies received 30 points from the charity stripe as the Saints were whistled for 30 fouls in the game to Washington's 19.
