Huskies Look For W Against BYU
November 14, 2017 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- The Washington Women's Basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Brigham Young University in a non-conference game on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The contest is the final home game for the Huskies in the month of November as they play the next four away from home before returning to Alaska Airlines Arena on Dec. 3.
Washington faces BYU for the second time in as many years, beating the Cougars 82-70 at BYU on Dec. 22, 2016. The Huskies hold a slight 6-5 edge in the all-time series through this will be just the third game between the two teams in Seattle.
Washington is coming off a 79-59 loss in its home opener against Idaho State on Sunday. The Huskies were led by freshman Kierra Collier, who poured in 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field in 19 minutes. Sophomore Amber Melgoza added 10 points while freshman Alexis Griggsby scored nine points and added four rebounds and two steals.
The Huskies battled back and forth with Idaho State through the midway point of the third quarter, holding a 45-42 lead just over three minutes into the third. However, the Bengals came alive after that, outscoring UW 37-14 the rest of the way.
Scouting the Cougars
Brigham Young hits the road for the first time this season after winning its home opener 75-67 in overtime over Southern Utah University. Senior Cassie Broadhead Devashayee, a preseason All-WCC team pick, led the team with 25 points, adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the contest.
Sophomore center Shalae Salmon added 17 rebounds including seven on the offensive glass, adding 12 points, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Senior guard Malia Nawahine added 19 points and five assists.
The Cougars have eight newcomers joining five returners (two starters) who saw significant playing time. BYU, which posted a 20-12 overall record and reached the WNIT First Round, was picked to finish third by the West Coast Conference coaches this season.
All-Time Series Record
Wednesday will mark the 12th meeting all-time between the two teams, but just the third in Seattle. Washington holds a slight 6-5 edge in the all-time series after an 82-70 victory in Provo last season. UW won the last matchup between the two schools in Seattle 67-66 as Sami Whitcomb drained a three-pointer with 4.0 seconds left. Prior to that, the last time the teams met in Seattle was an 82-65 BYU win on Nov. 23, 1999. Overall, the Huskies have won two of the last three games in the series.

Over the last three seasons there have been 44 OT games involving Pac-12 teams with Cal and Stanford each playing six. Overall, UW is 18-18 all-time in overtime contests.
Strength of Schedule
The Huskies are not shying away from playing tough teams in the 2017-18. Outside of the conference, the Huskies will also square off against #2/6 Texas and #9/8 Ohio State in pre-conference games.
Versus The State of Idaho
The Huskies play all three DI programs in Idaho this season, facing Idaho State in their home opener before traveling to take on Idaho and Boise State in the Gem State in December. Overall Washington is 29-5 against the three Idaho schools in its history and has not lost to one since an 88-66 loss at Boise State on Dec. 7, 2007. The Huskies are 19-1 at home against the Idaho schools all time.
