SEATTLE - Winners of three straight, the Husky volleyball team heads to the mountains this weekend for a quick and challenging road trip, playing two matches in two nights in two different states. The 11th-ranked Huskies will look to continue an upward climb in the crowded Pac-12 standings this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4, at Colorado and Utah. Friday the Dawgs will be in Boulder for a 5 p.m. Pacific time start against the Buffaloes, airing live on Pac-12 Networks, then UW will fly to Salt Lake City and face the 15th-ranked Utes the next day at 6 p.m. Pacific, streamed online.
With four weeks left in the regular season, the Huskies have moved into a three-way tie for second in the Pac-12 at 8-4. Utah is one of the teams tied with the Huskies, while Colorado, which is 26th in the AVCA coaches poll, is just one game back at 7-5. Second through seventh places in the Pac-12 are separated by just two games, and each week continues to shape the NCAA RPI, where UW moved up to No. 9 this week. Stanford is ranked No. 7 in the RPI, with Oregon 10th, Utah 11th, USC 16th, Colorado 17th, and UCLA 23rd. The Huskies also moved up in the coaches poll this week from 14th to 11th after their home wins over USC and UCLA.
The Huskies held off the Trojans in a classic last Friday, saving five match points in a 32-30 fourth set win and then taking the fifth set, 15-12. Washington then backed that up with a sweep of UCLA to record its first 2-0 Pac-12 weekend since the first week against Washington State and Arizona State. Senior Carly DeHoog was huge, posting 29 kills and hitting .519 on the weekend, but it was senior Tia Scambray who won a weekly honor, as she was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week with 4.38 digs per set and 0.75 blocks per set plus three aces and 18 kills. Scambray and Courtney Schwan both passed 1,000 career kills in the USC match.
Colorado also went 2-0 last week, getting two big road wins at the Oregon schools, completing a season sweep of the Ducks and Beavers and snapping OSU's five-match win streak. In conference matches, Colorado is hitting .218 and ranks fifth with 13.24 kills per set and fourth in digs at 16.06. Juniors Alexa Smith and Frankie Shebby rank fourth and ninth in kills per set in league matches, with Smith posting 4.00 and Shebby 3.49. Naghede Abu is hitting .336 in Pac-12 play with 1.14 blocks per set while Gabby Carta-Samuels is leading the back row with 4.04 digs per set. UW won the first meeting in Seattle in three sets helped by 15 blocks.
Utah edged out the Huskies in their first meeting, winning the first two sets on extra points, then UW won the next two sets to force a fifth, which the Utes won, 16-14. Utah won eight of its first nine Pac-12 matches but has lost three straight, a five setter at home to USC then two four setters last week at Oregon and Oregon State to go into the week at 8-4. In conference matches, Utah is ranked fourth with a .230 attack percentage and second in opponent attack percentage at .198. The Utes are the league leader in kills per set with 14.63 but can defend as well, ranking second in digs per set at 17.04 and fifth in blocks at 2.44. Senior Adora Anae is sixth in Pac-12 matches with 3.98 kills per set while junior middle blocker Berkeley Oblad is fourth in efficiency with a .357 mark and fifth in blocks at 1.20. Tawnee Luafalemana also hits .332 with 1.94 kills per set, and Carly Trueman posts 2.65 kills from the opposite side.
